02 sport trac missing 1st and reverse

2002 sport trac with 275k miles. started to accelerate from stop light but dropped out of gear and started to free wheel. put in second gear and second and it worked fine, after getting to about 45 mph I shifted it back into drive (and if I turn off the over drive button) it will grab third gear. additionally it will not grab reverse anymore I am afraid it is a dead tranny but was wondering if someone had a similar problem or maybe had some advice?

and also does anyone know how difficult it is to change this tranny?

Sounds like a failed OD sprag. Transmission will have to come out. If you plan to have it rebuilt stop driving it now to keep from destroying other parts that might be extra cost in a rebuild. Good luck. The R&R of transmission has been covered in many other threads.
