in my last explorer i ran a jl audio 18w3 in a ported box powered by a jl 500/1, im trying to decide if i should run four jl 12w1's in my 01 explorer sport or should i buy a 18w3 for this one, by the way i hit 146.6 db with the 18, i just want everybodys opinion on what they think would be louder, im gunna stick with the same amp and which ever i go with will be in a ported box. thanks

4 12s will have a large cone area advantage.

i wouldnt run JL with either option though.

Exactly, if you think about it. Common sense says that 4-12's have greater surface area on them. Go with the 12's unless you can afford to move to multiple 18's.

Are you completely stuck on the idea of 4-12's or an 18? Or is there other options there for you? Just curious.

those were just 2 options i thought about, always up for suggestions

Welcome to the site by the way.

1 18 would be cheaper than 4 12s...much cheaper.

2 15s would be another option. thats cheaper than 4 12s

how much power do you have to work with and what are you goals with the setup? is this just for a loud daily vehicle or do you plan to compete or a bit of both?

can you build your own enclosure?

i would go with one 18" it's cool to see one get loud + you can put it in a big ported box. i had one 15 in a 8 cu.ft. box with 144 sq.in. port it was loud and low.

i dont plan to compete , maybe just at local events, but thats about it. the amp i have always ran was a jl 500/1 which is 500 watts rms, when i had it hooked up to my last 18w3 i hit 146.6, in my explorer, but that was just in a factory spec ported box, ive always ran jl so i plan on doing the same this time

as for price 4 12w1's wont cost me uc more then 1 18w3

that 146 mustve been on a busted AC 180 mic, no way on a term

your money can go alot further with a different company

500 watts for 4 12s...jesus is crying right now :(
