My 91 Explorer 4Door 4WD Manual serpentine belt broke and I managed to get it to an auto parts store before it over heated (3 blocks) and got new belt on and it won't start. It's like it's not getting any gas. Checked the fuel pump and can here it buzzing when key turned on. Also checked the fuel pump reset up under dash on passenger side and did not need reset. What do I do next?

Welcome to the Explorer Forum!!!

I have just a few questions just to start the replies.

1. How badly was it overheated? Overheating is a real concern as the 4.0 OHV is known to crack heads when overheated.

2. Which, if any CEL codes are present when attempting to start the motor.

3. Was the engine cool when you attempted to start the motor after the belt change.

welcome! agree with above

He said it didn’t overheat. Check for spark. Most likely you disturbed something while working, or the belt did. The chances of a fuel pump failing 3 blocks after a belt breaking is pretty unlikely.

whoops, didnt read that right. read it as it overheated after 3 blocks before the store.

1) Just started gurgling and a little bit of coolant came out overflow. I only drove it 3 blocks.
2) No code readings
3) Yes was next day

If coolant came out of the overflow, you obviously overheated…..

Does the check engine light work? Does it illuminate when cranking the engine? does the tach move when cranking?

Any chance the clutch defeat switch fell off the clutch pedal arm? I’ve had that happen. Or something related to that switch? If it doesn’t get closed, the truck won’t start, but everything else works, fuel pump etc.

Don't know where to look...my people are all telling me to reset the computer

Barely...tops a quart
A quart? That’s a ton of fluid to lose. Not sure why you’re being dishonest.

You overheated the truck.

I'd advise against that, if there are inactive codes stored they will be lost, may need to check later if the obvious items don't fix the issue. Does the starter spin the motor?

Reading the original post again, it does say got to the auto parts store before it overheated, which means it overheated after getting there. Reminds me of the days wondering what is meant.

I took it as he got there before it had a chance to overheat.

The only other easy idea that I have is to make sure that the battery is putting out the required voltage to get the motor going. Other than that, overheating is a serious issue for these trucks so it could full well be outside the range of simple fixes.

Who are your “people”? Friends that are mechanically knowledgeable? Ask them about the clutch switch then. Stick your head down by the pedals and look up. The clutch pedal has an arm going up from the pedal, there’s a plastic piece with wires coming off it, it clips onto that arm.
