if you are using all those mod's like you said and you are using the stock tranny... thats your problem

OKay so I am assuming you are cracking the flex plate since you said torque converter I am guessing this is an automatic not a 5 speed so you are cracking flex plates.

Ford re-designed the flexplate because this is a common problem on OHV 4.0L trucks.
Are you replacing them with new units from Ford? They are like $40.

I was having the same problem. I was missing an alignment dowel in the bell housing causeing the trans to be misaligned and put more stress on the flex plate.

Thank you for your help, I will let the transmission shop know. Did that fix the problem in your case?

do you realize how much more hp you have now? I don't your tranny wants to deal with that, time to have them beef up the tranny

It might be the adapter part that goes between the flex plate and the block as well. I replaced mine after I broke a flex plate in my old A4LD. It was damaged although not bad. A $20 fix though.:) Most transmission shops don't replace them.

The transmission has put a new hockey puck spacer, I took it to transmission shop and there is another explorer with the same problem and it has broken the flywheel 6 times. Other explorers have had the same problem but they don't go back to the transmission shop. It might be the horsepower, buy I will have to ask if the other explorer has been worked on. thanks for for help.

I have a 1996 4.0 automatic that is cracking the flexplate. Can anyone give me a clue to why.
I am going to replace the spacer and I have now purchased a Ford flexplate.
Any help or other insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Wes

Welcome to this forum! Sonnax makes an improved spacer which is billet steel. The Ford OEM is powdered iron. Many aftermarket companies make flywheels, so you don't have to buy one from the dealer.

Talk about raising the dead. This thread is over 2 years old! Here is my Flexplate. I just replaced it and got my roll on.
