Engine braking only works until your speed drops to 37 mph or engine rpm falls to 1150 which ever comes first.

For city driving it is hardly noticeable.

If your going 45 and take you're foot off the gas it will only do it for a very short time, and only if your not in OD.

I know, I was just pointing it out because there seemed to be some confusion, and I wasn't aware of it because I'm always in OD unless I'm towing which is extremely rare.

sorry, I meant that for the OP

I have zero engine braking. I live in the country in the hills and it just coast. Pretty sure my other explorers never acted like this. Also my OD does not work. I haven't had time to look at it.

Could be as simple as a failed TCC lockup or 3/4 solenoid. They require removal of the valve body to replace, but it's not a very hard or expensive project. Been there and done that.

Dropping the pan you should be able to see the solenoids; disconnect the wiring harness and measure each for excessive resistance. Also you can try applying 12v and you should get a strong click response from them.
