1996 Explorer 5.0
I have a 1996 explorer AWD with a 5.0L V-8. After I drive it somewhere and shut it off, it's really hard to start back. Cranks over and sounds fine. It just cranks for a long time. Never does it when it's cold though. just put new plugs and wires in. 185,000 miles on the truck. Also looking for the easiest and fastest thing to put on to gain some HP for towing. Thanks in advance for any help.

fastest and easiest thing to help with towing? hmmmm TM headers are not fast or easy, but you need to install them first before you can make any more HP

You could do a computer tune, that helps a great deal for towing when done right, thats expensive, but easy to do if you have the right help.

Your hard starting issue, could be low fuel pressure? or a fuel pressure problem, with 185K miles it could be a few things, but fuel pressure is where I would start, listen to the fuel pump and verify its running, check fuel rail line pressure, check for fuel in the vacuum line to the pressure regulator

Other suspects: crank sensor, clogged cat(s)

96 is a very good year for the V8 explorer, I LOVE MINE

had this problem and then the pump went out. And the best mods I did was the torque monster headers and exhaust. and Intake made little better gas millage to.

Just changed fuel pump 4 months ago. wasn't starting hard until the change. Guy checked pressures and all okay.. but it only does in when engine is warm. Where do I get info about the computer tune and the headers? I"m not worried about gas milage just looking for more power. I cut the converters off and changed muffler, that helped alot to get those stopped up converters off. But love the truck Had it 8 years and don't plan to sell.

its a great rig, just sounds like yours needs a little TLC. When is the last time you cleaned your injectors? And any mod doing to the exhaust will help a lot there really restrictive check out my signature for a view of mine.
