1996 ford explorer vss trouble

Has anyone ever replaced the little gear in the transfer case that drives the vss sensor. If so did you have to remove the transfer case and take it apart to replace this gear?

You do not have to take the t case apart but you do have to seperate the t case from the tailhousing

this thread is my 4x4 conversion on my 96 explorer. I had to adapt my later model t case to use the 96 style VSS and had to install the drive gear you are talking about, there are plenty of pictures.

remove rear d shaft, remove tailhousing, replace gear...its pretty simple

Your 96 may be a bit different if its not a V8, but similar

Welcome to this forum! Are you sure that the inner gear is bad, and not the actual VSS, or the gear on the end of the VSS?
