You’ve probable got a cracked or warped head. The 4.0 heads aren’t terribly stout, and if you repeatedly hear them up you are asking tomcrack them.

Ahhhh kms im getting headgaskets today, so hopefully that's what it is

I’d have the heads checked out. No sense putting new gaskets in bad heads.

dont go buy head gaskets????? You have to remove both heads and have them checked, the block has to be checked and THEN you can buy head and intake gaskets

If the heads are bad I'll just swap it, any ideas?

You've overheated the engine so much, I'd be worried I had a cracked block too. If it was me, I'd pull the heads and have them tested for cracks, and I'd replace the gasket *if they passed.* I'd hope that fixed the problem, but if not, then I'd assume the block is cracked and sell the car for scrap. Not worth fixing...this isn't Cuba and there are plenty of other Explorers to buy.

So my transmission is messed up too
