I'm looking to replace the stock head unit and door speakers on my 97 XLT 4-door. I have the "Auto-Set" button on my stock HU but no stock sub, and the 6-CD changer in the center console. Everything in the car is stock... for now.

My current plan is to upgrade the HU and replace the speakers with a component set this winter and add an amp & sub next summer. I would also like to do some sound deadening on all four doors when I do the speaker swap; and the floor, firewall, and ceiling when I do the amp/sub install if its necessary. Current budget for each 'round' of upgrades is about $750 each or total to $1500. So if I don't spend all $750 for the HU/components/deadening, I can get a better amp/sub combo. All install will be done by me and maybe a couple buddies if I need help. We've all done car audio/electrical work before, just not on my car heh.

The HU's I'm looking at now are the Alpine CDA-9884/9886 or the Kenwood KDC-X792, but I'd really like something less cluttered as far as buttons go. The touch-screen HU's I've seen and demoed are very nice, but a little out of my price range (JVC KD-AVX44, for example). I really don't want any video playback, no dolphins jumping or any of that crap while the music is playing, and a blackout feature is just about required.

Speaker replacement is up in the air: I've seen the Infinity Reference (6820cs) component system mentioned a few times here and it was one I marked high, but the Boston Acoustics SL80 set that was reviewed on here I also liked a lot. I don't have to replace all four speakers, but I do have passengers quite a bit so it would be nice. Either way, I'm looking at the BA SX85 for the rear door replacements.

I have not started looking at amps or subs at all yet, and I'd rather not for the next couple months, but the only thing that needs to be kept in mind is that I do want the ability to add them at any time without getting a new HU. Shouldn't be a problem at all, but I thought I'd mention it anyways.

Long winded, sorry!
