2004 Mountaineer
Hello all. I couldn't think of a better place to ask this question so I created an account.

I have a friend who wants to sell me a 2004 Mountaineer for $200. It has 193k miles on it and 2 known problems.

#1 The real seals and bearings need replaced he recommended both sides.

#2 New passenger side head light assembly from a brush with a deer.

My friend bought a new F250 so just don't want to mess with the Mountaineer anymore.

He just lives right up the road, I have seen it, its not in bad shape, the engine runs pretty smooth. Just wanting to see if anyone else has had any experience with these and if I make all of the repairs will things continue to go out or should it be pretty solid. I know its a guessing game buying used sometimes anyway just looking for some opinions.

Thanks in Advance.

Does it have the 4.0l V6 or the 4.6l V8 engine? At that age and mileage the plastic timing guides may need to be replaced. Not hard on the V8, but the V6 is another matter. Lots of posts on this site about it. Have you done a test drive? if it is just rear bearings and such, it sounds like a good deal, but if there are engine and or transmission issues, then you need to ask yourself how much time, effort, and cash do to you want to put in to it. As for the headlight issue, you can find parts at a salvage yard fairly easily for that.

it's a good deal if you're a DIY guy, lots of parts available in the junk yard. At 193k miles expect lots of stuff needing to be replaced unless your friend already dealt with those and don't expect to just shell out $200.

What's the body condition?
