2000 Eddie Bauer Ed - How to put Window Up ?

More good suggestions - thx !
FYI, not sure I posted, but this is a 2000 EB edition.
And lots of stuff doesn't work, wipers, radio, 4WD, etc, all intermittant but lately it's been not working almost all the time.
BTW where are all these window relays?
In the engine comp fuse box ?

You did say you had lots of stuff not working. That's why I thought you might have a bad GEM module. Off hand I don't know where the window relay(s) are located, but I would assume it would be in the large power distribution box under the hood. Refer to the owner's manual for location of various relays in the power distribution box. There are also a few relays under the air cleaner in a small box, but those relays are not window related. There are also a few relays located over the accelerator pedal (I don't recall what they're for) and a few in the front of the jack storage area that are for door lock/unlock functions.

Free wiring diagrams can be found here in the Auto Repair Reference Center.

The battery saver and accessory relays should be in the (covered?) box near the gas pedal, up and to the right. I hope these pics are correct, they don't quite match but it's all I have of them.

Thx again...

Am I to uderstand the windows are not GEM related ?

I'm told (not my Exploder) that when (mostly IF :) the windows work, which is maybe 10% of the time, the drivers side window doesn't work. So that means the Drivers window doesn't work ever, at all, anymore. He tells me that he hears a relay clicking under the dash, so maybe that's where all the window relays are. Seems it has mulitple issues, but if we could fix the windows, he could do without some of the other stuff like -
the WW
the 4WD
the directionals
the heat
the radio
the overhead display

Are any of the above GEM related ?

All these are intermittant at best.

I don't see any indication that some like the turn signals have anything to do with the GEM, but the wipers do, and probably the heat since you have the EB edition with EATC automatic climate control, and AFAIK the 4WD needs the GEM too to activate the relay.

From what I've seen, if the GEM itself fails it's gone (at least whatever portion of it controls the circuit in question), not intermittent. Intermittent is more likely a bad electrical contact or relay. Do check the two large wire bundle connectors under the hood.
2nd gen issues? Try this first!

I'd make sure the relays work then go from there, maybe one is bad and causing "most" of the problems then a few other things have different causes.

Ditto, check the main relays under the hood(PDB) and those near the pedals. Swap relays as needed to verify any of them, they swap if they are the same size(two sizes in these cars).

The windows have one power wire(blue/black) as I mentioned before. ... edit(there's just one relay for that main wire).... All windows are fed from that one wire, and into one ground wire, both in the driver's door. Check those two wires, if they are okay, then any faults are in the switches or wires, or the motors. The switches are the weakest links, the fragile contacts inside are very old now.

^ I think there is the Accessory Delay Relay for the windows, turned on by the GEM. Here is a general description, might not be entirely accurate but seems about right to me. I'd credit the author but where I found it, he too was just quoting someone else:

Accessory Delay
The accessory delay is designed to supply power to the power window system after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position for up to 45 seconds.

The accessory delay system operates in the following manner:

When the generic electronic module (GEM) senses that the ignition switch has been turned OFF, GEM starts two timing functions:
accessory delay system
battery saver system
The GEM supplies a ground signal to relays for both systems.
Ground input to the battery saver relay supplies power to the accessory delay relay.
Ground input to the accessory delay relay supplies power to the accessory delay system.
The GEM will shut down the accessory delay system after 45 seconds and shut down the battery saver system after 40 minutes.
The accessory delay time out will be cancelled if either front door is opened or ignition switch is turned to RUN/ACC/START.

Battery Saver
The battery saver relay is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM) and is located in the fuse junction panel.

The battery saver relay is designed to supply B+ voltage to:

dome and map lamp switches.
visor lamps.
glove compartment lamp switch.
cargo lamp switch.
interior lamp switch on headlamp switch.
interior courtesy lamp relay.
delayed accessory relay.
The battery saver relay prevents excessive battery drain by interior lighting circuits. The battery saver relay operates as follows:

The GEM supplies a ground signal to the battery saver relay anytime one of the wake up inputs of the GEM is activated.
A wake-up command is sent when:

any door becomes ajar or is opened or closed.
the ignition key is inserted or removed in the ignition switch.
the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN.
the ignition switch is turned from OFF to ACC.
a wake-up request is received from the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module.
the driver or passenger door lock cylinder is turned to unlock.
The GEM will maintain the ground input with ignition in RUN or for 40 minutes from the last input activation with ignition switch in the OFF position. After 40 minutes the ground signal is discontinued.

This de-energizes the battery saver relay, preventing B+ voltage supply to the controlled switches and circuits.

Yes you are right, there is one main relay. I was thinking of the seats at the time I thought constant power. The OP kept asking about the "relays" for the windows, as if there are a bank of them. There will be just one relay powering all of them, not counting the GEM handling the auto down function.

That "Accessory Delay Relay" for the windows would be a constant use item, I'd replace that one if any symptoms exist, or at this age, 20+ years. That relay is turned on all the time while the ignition is on.

I'm working towards rebuilding a couple of my SUV's, and components like that relay should be replaced at this point. They are very reliable items, but under regular use, when they get to be so old, it's time to replace them as a maintenance item, not wait until they fail. These are the causes for a lot of vehicles being sold off or scrapped, old parts that have done their job, don't get replaced and the owner gets made at the car.

I need to make a long list of things like that which need to be replaced, or rebuilt as needed. The over head compass display can be rebuilt, as can the EATC and radio units, the message center too. I've had Mark VII's that need that kind of care, and those are vehicles about ten years older than the Explorers.

Oh wait, I do have another pic of that relay box, labeled even.

This is an older post, but I will need to get back to it again ,aybe this Spring as the windows stopped working again, so, I need to update/fix the post as this is a 1998 EB Explorer, not 2000. I had erroneous info back then from the prev owner...
