2000 Mercury Mountaineer
Just acquired a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer Premier with 159k miles

Seems to have all options but a sun roof. Runs pretty good and all the electronic bits seems to work but other than pulling a carfax, I have no other history.

Questions
1) what would you have a mechanic do right away? (besides the basics of an oil change, all air & fuel filters)

2) it does have one open recall, do I just pull into a dealership for that?

3) where would one best find a tan privacy cover for the trunk cargo area? (Searching always finds the cargo liners) anyone have a p/n? (Please don't say a junk yard, i would rather buy & ship)

I can tell you what I did when I bought some of these;

1. Change plugs - they are cheap, easy and you get a glimpse of what is going in combustion.
2. Inspect brakes, repair as needed, flush and replace brake fluid
3. Clean MAF, likely needed.
4. Clean throttle body
5. Changed transfer case fluid
6. Change trans fluid and filter as needed
7. Replaced stock shocks
8. 3 of 4 needed upper lower ball joints followed by alignment
9. Flush coolant and replace
10. Changed front and rear diff fluid
11. Any other repairs needed

1) Go in for a front end alignment. They will find any worn, or broken suspension parts and identify them. They cannot perform the alignment with worn parts, but might charge a small fee for the rack time and diagnosis.

make sure all 4 tires are same wear depth, size and BRAND .

Perform any needed maintenance

2) That should work. The recall will most likely be for the master cylinder brake pressure switch.

3) sending a PM

1, Check safety related stuff first. Brakes, steering, suspension, tires. Then fluids/filters.

2, You can call your dealership (or go there). Just have your VIN number ready to check for recalls.

3. eBay is probably your best bet for the privacy shade/cargo cover (or a salvage yard if you're lucky).
