What could be wrong? Computer shows bad pump circuit - I know pump works since we hooked it up direct... still no fuel pressure at the engine... only 83000 miles - could it be bad filter? what else should I check?

Did you connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel port? Do you have a no start issue?

Well - I bought this truck site unseen and had it towed to my friends body shop... he was going to touch up paint and buff it. Another friend was going to install missing ECM and program keyes... well, ECM is in, keyes programed but still, no start. There were two sprak plugs missing - my idea - someone checked pressure. Scanner still showing bad fuel pump circuit so they hook-up pump directly still, pump works but no pressure. No start - no pressure on two right cylinders - this is SOHC.

Tomorrow I'm going over to the shop to take a closer look at the issues. I'd like to get it fixed but looks like there are more issues with it than just the engine.

It might be as simple as clogged fuel filter so I'm taking one with me.

This is a former Fire department truck - when removing equipment they might of cut some wires by mistake... I'll have to see - I know that sometimes other people just don't have time and patience to work on other people cars... especially when they are your friends...

I'll have to check it all myself. What do I do with fuel pressure though - where do I check it and how?

Does it have switching to the fuel pump relay?

I'll have to check relay box for any missing relays...

lots of things are missing on this truck

thanks... I'll look into that.

Good diagram Jon.

Do you have fuel pump sound when you turn on the engine, for an instant or about a second? Does the "THEFT" light come on with ignition, and does it stay lit or flash with key in? You mentioned reprogramming keys and a new PCM, did you have that done with the magic Ford tool? I witnessed my Ford mechanic friend do mine, it took ten minutes to erase the codes from the PATS module, and he had to do it again for it to take a third key. Regards,

the guy that did the programing is a pro.

he did both keys but could not get rid of the pump circuit error.

I'll look at it tomorrow.

It would be a shame to just part this truck. I want to get it going so bad.

Okay, then I will assume that you have the key/PCM/Pats all matched. That was the most obvious thing to check. My 98 sometimes(very rarely) simply does not accept my key, and doesn't start. It took me months to realize that it was the key code recognition, likely my code reader.
The theft light will flash immediately when the ignition turns on and the code isn't acceptable. If you have a solid theft light then I would look at the signal going to the pump. Check at the pump relay, and at the inertia switch under the glovebox(firewall). The 99 got the more complicated fuel system, there is more that can cause problems than before 99. Even the gas cap can be trouble. Keep us updated, good luck.

well, after half a day at the shop I'm still far away from even starting this thing... it really looks like there's something really wrong with this engine. I did fix most of the small shyt but engine? There is no compression. Now I need to decide if it's worth for me to even look for a replacement engine. Here's the shop photo of the day:

So what are you thinking then, the valvetrain, timing?

So what are you thinking then, the valvetrain, timing?

top is OK... I did manage to remove the intake and valve covers - everything looks good and turns the way it's suppose to. There is a knock when I crank the engine though. Lower knock - like pistons... or a crank? Would have to take engine out and remove oil pan... but then again - I might just swap the engines instead. Will see.

It's a shame that the SOHC and its 5R55E seem to have so many issues. I chose mine for the potential fuel mileage, but reliability is a big factor when buying a used vehicle. I hope you find little wrong, I know what you are thinking about a fix versus replace idea. Good luck,

time=money

swap seems like a wise idea although there could be very little wrong with it.

Will see.

I know, I thougth long and hard about buying a SOHC versus the V8, wanting fuel mileage most. Now having driven my 98 AWD for 1.5 years with awful fuel mileage on route, I haven't been impressed yet with the SOHC. I think that I'm getting 10mpg on route, that is according to my Scangauge. I have achieved 10mpg with five other vehicles, so I was hoping for better, 11-12mpg would be great for me. I still have some kind of vacuum issue I haven't hunted enough to find, I'm sure that it's around the back, or lower intake.

Good luck with yours, you might run a short search for another engine, or donor vehicle drivetrain, some amazing deals turn up when you aren't looking for them.

it's not only that - other problems are also haunting me now...

I could get another engine in an instant - total cost with replacement around $1000.00... but the money is just not there at the moment and tax time is looming on the horizon.
:(
