Anyone have actual experience changing one? Please share any tips and other pain in the rear issues to deal with getting it out.

it is actually pretty easy to replace!

here is where I replaced the rack in my old 96 years ago, I did a step by step

the factory 5.0 pump and rack and pinion are very good!
Your best bet is to use a Motorcraft replacement (reman) and use motorcraft inner and outer tie rods
Flush the lines and cooler while it is out

If you're in it for the long haul, protect your investment in time & parts by adding this to your low pressure return line:

Magnefine brand 3/8" Magnetic Inline Power Steering Filter

I use that filter

With the 5.0 you’ll have to loosen the motor mounts so you can Jack the engine up an inch or so.
Some say this isn’t necessary. I ****ed with mine for three hours before relenting and jacking the motor. FSM calls for it as well.

Other than that, it’s straightforward.

Yes I lifted the engine slightly in the above posted step by step
