I have a 2001 Explorer XLS 4x4 (4A/4H/4L). The transfer case is not engaging when selector switch is turned to 4H or 4L. Suspect the issue is with the Transfer Case Shift Control Module. Problem is, I can't find this control module on the truck.

It's not in the passenger kick panel - this module is labeled as the Restraint Control Module.
It's not behind the air bag.
It's not behind or beside the radio.

This vehicle is NOT the sport.

Can anyone help with the location of this module? Also, the correct part number?

Thanks,

PDJ

Your control module is the gem module

The gem module controls the transfer case in a 2001 explorer v6 control trac

It is not until 2002 that the 4wd control module is a stand alone box built by Motorola

Great information! Where is the GEM located?

Behind the radio, can’t miss it, it’s a
Black box about 1” thick, 5 wide and 10”tall or so with 3-4 electircal
Plugs going into it

I found it. I was able to find an exact match at a local pick and pull. Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem of the transfer case not engaging.
Thanks again for the info!

Typically the shift motor gets lazy or hung up out of range

99% of the time the shift motor can be rebuilt on the shop work bench
99% of the time a new shift motor will fix these ESOF systems
I always do a battery disconnect reset to the system when any changes are made. This system will get stuck… meaning you can replace the problem shift
Motor just to have the same issue because the computer (gem) module has already decided the pet is bad and not working, it does not just “reset”
Disconnecting the battery for a hard reset has worked for me several times

I would remove shift motor
Put it on bench, open it up, clean and lubricate everything see if you can’t identify the issue
