So I bought another explorer... my 5th explorer now lol. 2002 4.6 4x4 limited. The guy I bought it from says that it would not shift from 1st to second and I think no o/d. Classic servo bore issue. However, instead of fixing the servo bore on the 5r55w, he got a 5r55s from a 2004 and swapped it. However, now that the 5r55s is in, the vehicle will not move in any gear. My question is, does the computer system not recognize the 5r55s? Is there any way to make it work? I did get the old 5r55w from the guy and can do the servo fix and put it back in, but is there any way to make the 5r55s work before I have to do all that work? I could not find a clear answer to this specific predicament anywhere. I would really appreciate any help.

5R55W and 5R55S should either "work". Only problem is different 2nd. gear ratios between the two. 5R55S should work, causing trouble code for wrong gear ratio from what the PCM is programmed to. Something is therefore suspect with your 5R55S.

interesting!!! I did not know that

are there aftermarket transmission controllers that can handle that 5s???

When did they go canbus?

So, it should actually work and even drive with the 5r55s, but will throw a code? Is there any difference in the solenoid pack? The only digital interface is the solenoid pack, right? So maybe it's actually a mechanical issue? Only thing I could think in that case is it would have to have no fluid in it. Otherwise, I would think it would shift manually at least. Is the gear ratio in the 5r55w better? What should I do? What could be the issue?

Is it possible that an electrical connection on the transfer case could make the t case go neutral?

2004.

People have swapped the S and W transmissions, the torque converter must be swapped with the one that goes with the transmission.

Yes, interchanging these transmissions introduces a mechanical issue: the gears engaged in 2nd. gear have differing numbers of teeth, thus causing shaft speeds to be outside of the computer's range of acceptance.

The torque converters are different? Seriously?

Yeah but it should at least move in first or reverse right? Is there any way to change the computer that controls the trans to accept the 5r55s?

This swap has been done before by members here with no issues. Physically the transmissions are identical twins except for the different gear ratios. Have you verified it has the correct amount of fluid?

That's what I thought too and fluid was my first guess. I asked the guy and he said he put like 13 quarts in it. I have not verified it, but I guess I just assumed he has no reason to lie since I bought it knowing i may have to swap the trans. I mean if it don't drive it don't drive. I even have a parts truck with another known good 5r55s that I could put in it. I will get it jacked up and check the fluid as soon as I can. Also, do I need to do anything for it to run and drive with a 5r55s? Will the gear ratio difference just throw a code or will it cause problems. If it's not going to work correctly either way then I'd rather just do the servo fix on the old 5r55w and throw it back in.

wasnt there a standaone for it? by usshift or something? or maybe im thinking about the W. iirc there was a member who put a 5r55s behind his 2g sohc, couldve sworn he used a standlaone

Us Shift has/had one for the 5R55E. PCS also had a standalone for the 5R55E and the forum member you mentioned figured out how to get it to work with the S transmission.

I see. So there is definitely something off on mine and it should be working just fine. I will take a look at it.

Cannot confirm nor deny, sorry. Anything is possible. The difference, if any, might only be stall speed, or could be significant, like differing splines.
