I was driving down the road when all of a sudden my Explorer made a screeching noise and would not drive. I pulled over to the side of the road and tried to put it into gear and it did nothing, no noise, no shifting into gear, nothing. What could be the problem?

what happens if you put it in manual 1 or 2? sounds like classic VB issue imo

Whats vb and whats the issue?
VB= valve body

usually a gasket blows so theres insufficient pressure to engage gears, but usually man 1/2 will work as its a diffferent servo combo iirc. they can cause lack of shifting into gear, flares, and all that stuff from a lack of line pressure. and plus the 5rr5e/s are known for these issues... typically the fix is: new VB gasket, ford bonded plate, shift kit (raises line pressure), and epc solenoid, the superior, sonnax, and transgo shift kits all accomplish the same job: raise line pressure to prevent shift flare. at the same time fix the blown gasket... that is if its a Vb issue
