Good day everyone. Just came into a 2006 Explorer and the fuel gauge has an issue. I got it from my father so I know he has replaced the sending unit 2 times and had the gauge “tested” by the dealer. The problem is when you fill it up the gauge reads full. After about 5 gallons it reads half the drops to low and displays the low fuel warning. Thoughts? Do I need a new gauge cluster? Any help would be great.

Try a can of techron to clean sending unit

It’s not the sending unit or should I say shouldn’t be. It’s been replaced 2 times back to back. The gauge has been tested by ford so it sweeps but that doesn’t give a reason why it just drops to half then empty.

Not sure whether this is your issue, but its important to have the key out of the engine and the doors closed when re-fueling Explorers. The PCM is actually involved in setting a fuel level on the gauge.

You might try re-setting the PCM's stored memory (check Youtube for method), and see if that helps.

The fuel gauge never goes to 100%. And after 4 gallons drops to half. At about 10 gallons it drops to empty. Like I stated before I doubt it’s a sending unit. It’s to consistent and has never gotten any worse. I’ll try the pcm reset this weekend
