Thanks for that! I see the pictures but I couldn’t make out the impedance.

Stock sub if anyone wanted a pic of it. Dual 1.2ohm voice coils.

I know this question wasn't for me, but I used new capacitors as it was easier to wire them in. The stock ones don't have a long enough lead. I just read what the value was on the side of the existing capacitor and got the same one.

So the individual speakers had capacitors on them? I'm guessing the stock amp is just full range pass through, and the caps limit the bass on the speakers?
Did the tweeters in the doors have caps on them too?

In my 2018 Sony the door tweeters, center instrument speaker and the two rear pillar speakers all had a small capacitor installed.
The rear door speakers did not as they were full range coax. Can't remember the front door main speakers.

Funny the rear doors didn't have caps, good way to blow the woofers on them.

I would imagine the front doors had caps too, but I'll look for more into on them

Thanks for the reply

I’ll look at other pics I have and see.

My new tweeters do.

My front door tweeters have capacitors on them.

Also is the sub wired in parallel? If it is, then the stock sub is utilizing 0.6 Ohms and an aftermarket 1Ohm dual voice coil would yield 0.5 Ohms and a 2 Ohm dual voice coil would yield 1Ohms.

I looked at my pics. Can’t tell is they have caps. And I have recycled them already.

No worries. I would recommend a 200 microfarad (iirc) one to cap the low bass to the woofer. At least i know the crossovers aren't inside the amp

Just an update.

With the issue I had with the sounds here: Advice/Sanity Check

I had to replace the rear door speakers. The Rockford Fosgate speakers maybe lasted 1.5 years. One of them was totally blown. I rock out at times, but not everyday. I noticed my sounds issues above in maybe July 2021, could of been earlier.

I got Kicker 46CSC674 to replace them. They sound great. I hope they last longer.

Was the voice coil seized or was the cone on it torn?

Just sounded blown. No tearing.

Usually distorted blown speakers are from overheating and damaging the voice coils, or overextending the speaker and damaging the suspension or coils.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am wanting to replace the rear D pillar speakers in a 2018 Explorer. Wondering if anyone has attempted to use 4 inch speakers in place of the 3.5 inch.

I have already upgraded all door speakers and front tweeters to Polk Audio, Polk does not make a 3.5 inch speaker but they do make a 4 inch so that is part of the reason. Plus I am using an aftermarket amp, 4 inch can handle more power than a 3.5 inch. I currently have one amp running all door speakers and the tweeters, but plan to add a second amp that will power just the 2 front door tweeters and the 2 rear D pillar speakers.

I looked back in this thread to look at the D pillar pics. It might actually work. Scroll back and take a look.

Possibly, not much information out there on the D pillar speakers. I think I will probably order both a pair of 3.5 inch and 4 inch speakers, then return whichever set I do not use. That is the easy part, the part that has me stressed is taking apart the interior quarter panel. I had a car audio store install the first 4 channel amp but plan on doing this other amp myself. I am using the Rockford PBR 4 channel amps for mids and highs, these amps are very small. I also have a Fosgate Power 500.1 amp under the driver seat that powers my sub(s).

This weekend I installed Polk Audio DB 4 inch speakers in the rear pillars. They are being powered by Punch amp that pushes about 75 watts per channel. I had to cut out the factory 3.5 inch speakers from their basket and sand down the plastic to basically make a bracket to mount the 4 inch. The reason for this is the rubber surround on the 4 inch would have been touching the plastic on the D pillar and they needed a little space to move. That said they fit barely, and I risk the D pillar on the driver side popping out of place. The passenger side seemed to fit a bit better. The sound is much better in the 3rd and second row but I can’t really tell much of a difference in the driver’s seat. If I had it to do over again, I would have probably just went with a 3.5 inch speaker, I just wanted to keep it all Polk Audio for the mids and highs but Polk doesn’t make a 3.5 inch.

Just joined to thank you for the write up. Ordering parts to do my 2019 Sport.

Went with Rockford P165-SI for the front and P1650 for the rear doors.

I am debating on doing the rear pillars and sub but I am stuck.

There are two options that I could go with but I am not sure what will work best with the stock Sony amp.

They are the Pioneer TS-A2000LD2 which is dual 2ohm coils and then there is the Kicker Comp 43CWRT81 which is dual 1ohm coils.

Which would work best with the stock amp? Or would I be better off doing the polyfill mod with the stock sub. Did you happen to notice what the ratings on the stock sub where?

How are you liking all the changes that you made?

Cheers,

Chris
I have decided to document the install of my new speakers. I just received them today from Crutchfield.

Kicker 3 1/2" for the center - Kicker 43DSC3504 DS Series 3-1/2" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield

Rockford Phosgate R165-S for the Front doors and tweeters - Rockford Fosgate R165-S Prime Series 6-1/2" component speaker system at Crutchfield

Rockford Phosgate R1675X2 for the Rear doors - Rockford Fosgate R1675X2 Prime Series 6-3/4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield

I also ordered door sound proofing, tape, and roller tool from Amazon.

I plan on doing the rest this weekend so I will update this thread. I need more light and it is getting dark here earlier and earlier.
