26.5 MPG in an OHV!!

On the latest trip to Hilton Head SC, with the A/C on the entire trip,(there and back) I averaged 21.7mpg. Thought that I would give an update since there has been some activity on this thread recently.

Ever since my overdrive started working, I get great milage. Just checked it yesterday and it was 20 MPG. Use to run at or below 15 MPG.

Gotta remember about that washer, I hate going 65. I still do it a lot though (and over).

yeah, I've only driven 80 k's this week because of gas prices. Doesnt hurt to ride my bike to work and town unless it's raining in the spring/summer anyway

I got a religious 15mpg city and 17 mpg hwy until I swiss cheesed the airbox and replaced the tubing from TB to airbox with 3" flex tubing. Now I get 14-15 city and 20-21 hwy. If I lead foot it around the city it goes down to 11-12mpg easily. Pings like crazy with the mods, so I had to switch to 89 octane to stop it. It must be running lean, so is there a way to richen it a bit? I reset the ecu twice. I was thinking about the reisitor mod for the IAT sensor.

If you ping with your new tube, that might mean that you are leaking unmetered (post-MAF) air with your new tube. Make sure it's clamped very tightly at the MAF and at the TB.
EDIT: Unmetered air will cause you to run lean

I probably am since I jerried the stock rubber from both ends of the stock tube to use on the new one. I had a 2.5-3" silicone coupler from pep boys that didn't fit the TB (it seems to be 2.75"). The rubber was somewhat degraded and ripped when stretched over the new tubing. I was going to remove some material from the coupler I had to make it 2.75" but never got around to it. Thanks Rhett, I didn't even think of that.

you're not getting any gains from your bigger intake tubing, put your stocker back on a seal it up. I was going to get larger piping myself but decided against it.

im stoked i got 15mpg on the way home from the gear shop wher i got 4.56 put in the ol xlt..thats on m y 31s..i really wunna see what im gunna be gettin on my 35s..prior to thi si was gettin a solid 10 mpg on 31s and stock gears every tank..

Thats awesome, my normal mileage for 322 up over the mountain into centre hall and back home trips I've gotten is right around 24.5. That was goin 65-70.

I consistently get 21-22 US MPG (around 11 L/100Km) on the highway and to be honest don't know the last time it's been tuned up - has old plugs/wires, orginial cats (2 of them), stock airbox, etc. I'm surprised I get this and could prolly get better with a tune. Usually at around 70 MPH, if I were to step off the gas a bit to around 65, I'm sure I'd get a bit more.
Keep in mind our trucks are basically a box with tires. Sometimes if you get extraodinary mileage, chances are it's from a big tail wind behind you.
The depressing part is that's the same mileage I get on my pickup with a V8 and 100 more hp!! haha

i believe that, my gf use to have an x-police interceptor and she got about 25 to 28 and it had about 190k on it with 3.73s. it look rather rough and sounded like it but no matter how hard i pressed the ohv she still would put out 25mpg. didn't have a working egr valve and abs...but she ran like a champ, also it was 4wd.

FYI I know for a fact that later gens like 95 and up the a/c cycles every 5 min or so and also when on defrost the a/c is on - regardless of position of the lever inside. On the first gens they do not do this.. viola better gas mileage.

People sometimes do not know how to get better gas mileage.
I have owned over 40 vehicles and this is what I have learned:

1. Change all fluids to synthetic - front rear diff, tranny, engine. I did this on my 5Liter mustang and mileage went up. Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine proved this on their Dyno.
2. O2 sensor replaced - when they get old or start to not work they dump more fuel into the engine.
3. Free flow cat from Jegs etc.. Better exhaust - less resistance in exhaust.
4. NGK spark plugs.
5. Chevron gas. Shell and Esso (Exxon) low grade are the worst. 89 - I get better gas mileage on the 89 than I do on 87. 91 does not make a difference on explorers
6. K&N air filter on road - do not use on off road -especially behind another on a dusty road - use a regular filter for that.
7. Tire pressure. 36 - 38 in BFG A/t's fyi.

i got a 4x4 ohv, 31's with 3.73's and the average for my las few tanks is like 12 mpg, mostly city driving.

I wish I could get that kind of mileage... I just got 22.5 mpg on my trip down to Portland last weekend. I just can't seem to break 23 mpg.

no police intercepter ford crown vic ever had 4wd.

the engine in crown vic is the 4.6 which is known for its good mileage.

i have a town car with the same engine and never get below 25 mpg in city and some freeway driving.
