I was wondering why you dont see many 2wd X? Since I am more of a 1st gen guy I am a bit behind.... Someone said they only did 2wd in '96.... I have reciently bought one and know that there not to easy to find, most seem to be awd.... Thanks for any info, Jason

there are a lot of the 4x2 explroers around... and no, they made 4x4s in 96, my mom has one.... you may not see many on this site, but look around in general, this site is based mroe towards the 4x4 or offroad crowd.... off hand i can name a couple people on this site with a 4x2, but thats because i only know of very few built up.....

well I am talking about when I was looking in truck trader or e-bay or a few other places... seemed like the 2wd was a little more rare... I know they had 4x's or awd or what ever in '96... Just seems like you dont see that many of them, I have been in several towns and looking on lots and most I have found around here are AWD... Anyways thanks, Jason

ok... never mind.....

Jason,

Are you referring to the 5.0L/2wd combo? I have never seen one, and didn't know they existed until you posted that you had one. I was under the impression that they were all AWD or 4x4.....as I have been looking for a 'parts car'

well and the guy I bought mine from in Ohio says he has not seen another one in his area for the last 7 years he has owned it.... Yes the 2wd/V8 combo... I have seen very few around here also.... Talking 2nd gen here...

we dont se many here but i have seen one with TX plates(2wd V8 that is it was about a 97) but they did make them and there are plentyful(sp? lol) in the southern states from what i have seen. when i do down south i see alot of them. theres like 10 of them on this site. you can tell by the V8 emblem on the 96-97s.

My X is a 99' 5.0L 2wd.

They seem fairly common here in Southern California. About a 50/50 mix of 2wd, and AWD for the 5.0L motor.

Mine is 2WD, but I have the V6.

couldnt you just take the front driveshaft off of an awd and then youd have a 2wd, and put it back on when you want awd?

The ~900lbs difference doesn't go away. And, if I'm not mistaken, the system will still attempt to work, effectivly leeching power from the rear axle and giving it to the (no longer connected) front axle.

I may be wrong though. Anyone know how the AWD system works? Is it adaptive? Or is it always running the fronts?

900 lb difference??? what? Try 250-300 lbs at the most. I've taken mine off and it turns easier and I didn't loose any power that I can feel.

i notice a big loss on off the line power when lacking the front driveshaft. On the other hand i notice more 40 mph+ pickup

Hmmn.. Oops..

Somehow I thought I remebered that being the difference! I was taking my weights from msn's carpoint.. But they show an AWD trim of my X at 4357LBS, and the 2WD at 3957LBS.

I musta been doing voodoo math! My bad!
