does anyone have experience with this combination. I am going to run 35s or maybe 36s on my explorer. It has a D44 and a 9inch with 3.73. I was wondering how bad the gearing will be in this, keep in mind i have a c6 tranny, so no overdrive.

i have a Jeep on 35"s, Dana 44s, 3.73 gearing with a TF727 3spd, no OD..... Its tolerable, but could be way better, im upgrading my gears to 4.88s, as im most likely swapping 38"s on.... if i stick with 35s/36s im gunna go 4.56s

But your also gunna have a V8 im guessing? but your user name....

im only running a 258 straight six, but i think might jeep is also lighter than an Explorer.....

Good Luck

i would imagin your CJ is about 1000 pounds lighter then an explorer haha, i really dont know, but you 258 is much larger then the 244 (4.0) in an explorer

so Jeep = Bigger motor & Lighter? cant go wrong there!

Try again, that Jeep is lighter with a smaller engine.

This Explorer has a 351 Windsor.

351wExplorer, if the gearing does bother you a lot, you might hunt around for someone who knows how to build a strong AOD. You could swap an AOD in if you get a throttle valve cable to properly attach to the carburetor. The TV cable for an AOD is absolutely critical to its survival. If you get it right, the trans can last as long as the vehicle. If it isn't right, the trans may burn up immediately, or very very soon.

The AOD has a 2/3 high gear, 2.46:1 first gear. The stronger parts from the AODE's will go into them, as well as the Supercoupe OD band servo parts. The wider ratio planetary gears will also go into them(2.84:1 first). Built right, they can take more horsepower than your 351W has. Good luck,
DonW

With the hard core wheelin' that you should be doing after all of this work to put full width, I would regear to at least 4.88s if not 5.13s so when you decide to go bigger on the tires (and you'll want to) you'll be good for the change gear wise. I ran 4.56s with 35s and would have liked to have either 4.88s or 5.13s for crawling.

Yep lots of info and personal opinions for this. As stated you will have a 351 in this thing when you are done. This will alow you to run a higher gear set in the axles cause your C-6 and higher horse power engine will alow this. I would focus on a better t-case. Like maybe a Dana 20 or NP 205. Something you can rebuild with lower than 2.46:1 low range. I would problably run 4.10:1 or maybe 4.56:1 gears in the axles, but only if I was running a good deep geared transfer case.

Big thing get a huge cooler for the C-6 and a deep transfer case gear ratio. Your motor and wallet will like you much more if you are going to drive this thing any at all on the street. With 5.13 or 5.38 which are available with the 9/44 axle combo you will be running red line on the street at 65mph.

i plan on running the street quite a bit with this. every day to school in back which is like 4 miles, up to silverlake occasionally which is like 65 or so miles from my house, and then just around town. so it will be on the street quite a bit. I am hoping to get away with the 3.73s because i dont really want to change them. well actually i would love to put 4.56s or so in it but money is the problem... My dad already has helped my quite a bit with the costs seeing how i am 18 and still in school. thanks for the input though and ill let you know how it the gearing is once i get to drive it

hey xplorerkid what RPMS were you runnin at 55mph and 70mph?

cant tell you, my tach dont work, another thing i need to do i guess..... LOL

thats cool, but im guessing my tach wont be up and running when my truck is. I think im going to have to go all aftermarket gauges with the 351.
