So yea i doubt this cause i know some of yall hardcore crawlers are running 37"s on your 8.8 and yall abuse them, My trucks only been in the mud once, and it was nothign serious cause im only 2wd. So i guess its prolly install error. Theyve been in less than 3 months prolly so i dont know what it could be. I have to wait till i get home to check it out. At first i thought it was the trans, but the driveshaft still turns, its just the rear end aint turning with it. Im figuring one of the inside gears. I went to pull outta a nieghbor hood and all i heard was a loud pop, and thats all she wrote. Any ideas would be appreciated, as im at school right now and it will be 3 before i can take the cover off. It has 4.88 Yukon gears in it. I bought them New, but from some one on the forum, so i doubt i can get them to warrenty it.

liek i said any suggestions would be nice.

is the rear locked up? If so it sounds like you grenaded something in your diff, were the gears professionally installed?

rear not locked up, its just not transfering the driveshaft to the rear tires, i drug it home, and the tires were free spinning. Yea gears were professionally installed.

is the driveshaft turning the yoke?

It was still dark, and i couldnt see to well, plus i had to hurry to get it home, and get a ride so i wouldnt be late for school. But if the driveshaft is turning, im almost positive the yoke would be spinning. I dont know all bout the gears, but could it be the spider gears? Doesnt that connect the two axles? Like i said i dont know bout all the workings

37's are too much for the 8.8 according to "recommendations in the 4x4 industry"

BUT that really doesnt mean squat.
The 8.8 is stronger then a Dana 60 if I remember right.
When you run big tires you are going to need to do a few things to keep from breaking.
First off use STRONG aftermarket parts, this means no Motiv gears, use YUKON or FORD.
This means keep an eye on things and expect more wear then usual (bearings, brakes, pinion, axleshafts)

To say that 37's are too much for the 8.8 would be wrong, for some people they may break the 8.8 every other week, some can wear out 4 sets of 37's and never have an issue. Alot of it depends on the driver and the parts inside the 8.8 housing.

I bet your gears snapped - more than likely your pinion gear. Good luck on it

Im thinking instalation error, got the cover off, and from what i can tell, every bolt that holds the ring on was sitting in the bottom of the differential. the Ring doesnt look to be chipped, but the i think ABS ring the one with all the small teeth, is pretty fubared. Wait for my dad to et home to really look at the damage, hopefully the place is willing to take some kinda of blame, maybe re set up my gears for free, if i get the new ABS Ring...

stronger than a d44 but dunno about a d60 ;) (~1" larger ring diam)

i wonder how your ABS ring got chewed up -- the ABS ring is just there for the ride, nothings "bites" on it.

Wow, sounds like a bad deal, sorry to hear about that. Maybe the bolts got loose and chewed up the gears or ABS ring. If you just had it done, I would hope the shop had a warranty on their work, because they ought to make it right for free. If they are reputable they will, anyway.

I tihnk from the bolts sitting in the bottom of the differential and the abs ring going around chewed at it?

Anyone have a pic of the rear end without a cover on it? i could do some illustrating on?

^^I think 410 might have one in his thread about the ARB and stuff in his 8.8

Offroad69me had the same problem earlier this year, the shop may have forgot to lock tight the bolts! If you have them redo it take them a big ass tube off lock tight! lol. Good luck with it, let me know if you need any pics. My 8.8 is out and just sitting there.

My ring gear bolts also came out, this was 2 years after the gear install.
Over heating might have played a role, as best I could figure because I drove almost 3 hours while it was spilling fluid (peeled the cover open on a rock, had no idea).
I found the leak the next day and there was still a good amount of fluid in the diff, so I just replaced the cover.

Later I towed the boat from CA back to CO and about 2 months later the ring gear bolts backed out, they chewed up the ABS stator ring (I dont use it in my truck) and also chipped the ring gear in a couple of spots. I p[ut new bolts in and drove it like this for about a month before I finally had to replace the gears.

The shop who setup my old 4.10 ring and pinion was out of business now and so I took it to a VERY trustworthy gear guy. They installed a new set of Yukon 4.10's and a ARB locker.

He said the old shop had failed miserably when setting up the gears, they had it way out of spec compared to what he would haev considered "acceptable"

So it was: time + wrong backlash + heat = failure as far as we can tell.

there are carnage pics in my ARB thread:

Can you (do you?) run your rear gears without the ABS ring installed? Or is it still in there.

the stator ring is still there, I believe you can remove the ring but you will need shorter bolts. I will nevr use the 8.8 speed sensor in the BII so the shop just left it in the carrier.

Ok talked to the guy today, He said yep they sheered off, Lol, like nah? He said bring the axle in and he'll fix it, so i guess ima take out the axle this weekend, and take it to him, what to do bout the ABS? just unplug the re sensor and not worry bout it?
