3rd generation Bumper registry

Swing arm base is done and is now on the car, toegther with modified (read cut), plastic bar cover. Looks OK, IMO:

Excellent! That is great work... (shiny tip too).

Donner - any full shots of your beast yet? Side on, front 3/4 and rear 3/4 when you're ready would be great.

In the meantime, the swingarm for my tyre carrier is complete. Just need one 65mm (2.5") long by 9/32" bolt (about 7mm, perhaps 1/4" or 6mm will work too) to fix the locking bracket to the bar on the truck, and she's all ready to go. It's even able to be locked with a padlock to discourage theft. Oh, and I've made it a low mount so that the window glass can be opened without the need to swing the arm away.

So...some crappy night time phone-camera pictures:

You may notice the dollops of weld; this is also why you may notice the bolts. Welded and bolted; should be heaps strong!

Looks very nice Jcuz, a question tho', what are you doing with the licence plate? seems to me like the tire will cover it...

(Oh yah, I got pics :) Be right back...

I'd bracket the plate to the spare...

Oh shiznit!!

My chromes got destroyed, the coating was gone and they couldn't be polished. So, I had them powdercoated high-gloss black... Went to take pics just now and saw this::eek: and others are coming loose...

I like them better black!

Doesn't the skid plate blind oncoming drivers??

The chromes were my favorites :( But it's okay, as long as they stay on the vehicle... they forgot to tighten the lugs. The skid plate was originally like this, but I had it painted black, but it's back to steel... I sanded it down so it would reflect...

Donner - I had the same thing happen to me; tyre shop left the lug nuts loose, and it ended up snapping a stud. They replaced the stud with no cost to me, and now first thing i do after getting wheel alignment, or any wheel work, is to torque the lug nuts up when I get home (I found you can do about 40 miles with loose lug nuts before anything happens).

As for the licence plate; I will get an "Accessory" plate which is smaller than the original, and it will sit off to the right on the swingarm. the original plate will stay there. The biggest change I have to do is to move the reversing camera, as it is totally blocked by the tyre.

Donner - your beast is looking good (still like to see the rear though).

Can you get a side view of the front end. That plate still looks straight up and down. I'm curious to see the actual angle that it sits at.

Donner - hope you don't mind me posting these up in your thread, but I thought where else to "do a Donner"?!

Here's a little teaser of my new project for the explorer. It's nearly done, and when I've finished it, I'll post up some full pics.

Painted (No.1 son wanted yellow, mum and others wanted red, so this is how I satisfied both lots!

JCUZ, did you ever get that skid plate finished and installed? I'm curious to see how it looks. Also, do you have the dimensions/specs on it? I'm in the process of designing one, possibly going all the way back behind the engine (two sections). Right now, I'm in the drawing phase. Hopefully before too long, I will be into the template mode making one out of cardboard to check out.

Edit: I saw the one picture that you posted of it on, but do you have any more?

The rear is nearly done... I keep changing my mind, and we keep redoing things... but I think I have a solution. (Good eye! I've been hiding that area)

The skid plate is frustrating because it's actually at an angle, but you can't tell... I'm going to have it pulled out further... I'm putting lacquer on it, it doesn't shine, it looks wet.. pretty neat.

I just pulled off the fender flares - bondo and paint match w/ a little more diamond plate to complete the strip... but the fenders will remain bare.

Here is the basic design that I am working on.

I am also considering some wing/arms that come up from the sides, but at this time, I'm not 100% sure. Basic and rough description, top will be at the front of the vehicle 32" wide. Cross lines represent bends, so top section is mounted at the frame (3" wide), bend down below radiator (4" drop), back towards cross member (15" back/diagonal), under cross member and mounted (4" section), approximately 27" wide. Ventilation holes (black circles) are 2" diameter, but up for change as it was just easier to draw them that size). I'm still waiting to the cardboard phase to see if the wing/arms are a possibility as I didn't take measurements on the actual drop that is there.

Okay, so I just ran to look real quick in the dark real quick definitely need to add something on the side to protect the radiator hose (think that is what it is) that runs under the radiator and heads back towards the motor.

Yep, it's exactly 500mm wide, by 600mm long (divide by 25.4mm to get to inches). I tapered the edge at the front - it's probably 100mm long (4"). The back bit that is bolted to the suspension cross beam is about 15mm (1/2" or so). The holes are free for all (though I did rule up and have similar spacing and pattern).

I have a more up to date photo at home - will post it up later tonight.

Pretty similar in dimensions to the one I am designing. Stupid me ran out in the cold/dark and took actual measurements for the wing/arms up the side. I'll post another picture later. Basically I'm adding them to the tapered down part to cover or fill in the sides. At the widest point in the picture, they will be 4" out to 7.5" and I'm going to try to have them sealed (possibly welded) on the 4" end.

I made a cheesy little mock up out of paper and it is looking promising.

(Sorry guys, I fell asleep :)

I don't have that top bend in my plate... that's what's missing. The tire carrier is looking like you might need a patent... looks too good :)

Your plate mounts to the bottom of your bumper doesn't it? I think that is where the major difference is. We have to mount to the frame and clear the radiator and whatnot.

mounts here...

very close up...

Is this one any better?
