I'm looking to buy a salvaged explorer to get it's engine. I have a 1994 4x4 manual. I have a basic question.

What 4.0 blocks from what years will work?

I understand, that In 99 the OHC engine came into play. So ideally I'll want to stay in the 91-98 year range.

I plan to swap all of my sensors and attachments over as needed. Just want to make sure they're wont be any block issues.

Read a few bits of this thread and it seems like I should be fine.

I've looked into some Rangers as well, but most I see don't have the 4.0 in them.

If you need an engine for a 1994, I'd stick with 1991-1994, MAYBE 1995. Reason being, OBD-II came into play in 1996 and you'd probably have to do a fair amount of swapping bolt-on parts. Ideally, you'd find a 1994 so it's definitely got the 93TM heads but not newer stuff that the 2nd gen's had.

What I remember from replacing my 4.0:

'91 to '94 are the exact same long block -- Explorer, Ranger, Aerostar -- all the same. To be absolutely sure there are no issues, stick with '91 to '94.

I think '95+ OHV's can be made to work, but they are not exactly the same. Internally, I believe they changed the piston/cylinder geometry a little bit and there may be some external differences as well.

Any year ohv block will work as far as mounting and if your swapping ALL ELECTRONICS..the earlier 90-94 blocks are thicker but thats it..after 97 they have all the updates that were added over the years..personally id look for a 98+ block..thats IF your swapping ALL electronics

I think there are some differences in the flywheel--no?

Lower intake is also shorter 95-up, and, motor mount plates changed in 95 I think

Yes clutch went to 1/8" bigger but either can be used on either flywheel..flywheel and crank went to 8 bolt and front crank key went to a larger size.timing set has to be for that year crank but crank pulley is same..as stated before the pistons and heads are different from 95 and up.

I didnt know about lim being shorter, know they went to a plastic one intake..

Mounts did change and block got I ""believe"" an extra bolt hole but think either will mount up.they both attach to frame in same manner tho..

I'd be keeping only the heads and block. Unless something else made sense.

Are you saying the motor mounts will or won't line up. I don't want to do any welding.

They added a mounting boss but the boss needed to mount in the 91-94 are still there. I put a 95 short block into my 91.

5.0L !

Might as well go nuts!

If I live long enough to see my 4.0 fail, I'm gonna go 5.0 Liter.... . .

Just a thought.

There is one in town for $250 with 130k on it. But it's not just a drop in swap. Pretty sure new motor mount mounts have to be welded. Among other things.
