4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

The water spraying the lens was pure luck as the camera was a good 10-15 feet away. Im not sure how to edit to block the plate though.

That sounds pretty good. You should take the truck out for some nice long drives to clear that moisture out.

It does get some long drives in. I drive about 7-8 miles each way to work, and it gets driven hard a good bit. I probably average between 200-250 miles a week. I'm surprised that it actually impresses some people. I thought about experimenting with the Super 40 or Super 44 just to see how they sound. Too bad they don't have trial periods for mufflers....But yeah, so far I like this muffler. It does NOT drone at all on the highway, in fact you can barely hear it while cruising. I'm actually glad I went with the Pro over the Extreme. I still have a few things I want to do with the exhaust. I've been thinking about header wrap to see its effect on sound and performance.

Froader.. Do you have a flex fan installed?

Dan,
I actually have a single in/out 2.5" super 44 sitting in my shed. It is really quiet on our motors...even with the cats off. I opted to stay with the original 40 because the super 44 on our motor just doesnt sound good.

Its not so much loudness that I'm looking for, its the deep throaty rumble that I want, I know it won't sound like a V8, but Im trying to get as close as I can. At idle, I'm just about where I want to be. For this reason I almost went 3" pipe, I know that its a bit large, but I would have went with a longer muffler trying to get a deeper sound. I have yet to really notice a difference performance wise and I've run eveything from factory to straight pipe. I do have one of the cats hollowed and would like to replace it with straight pipe, or have straight pipe welded inside to retain the factory appearance. I will not remove the main cat. unless its clogged and in which case it will be replaced with a hi-flow unit. And if that happens I will have a new Y-pipe fabbed up using 2.25 or 2.5" pipe.

great thread

Great thread guys! I am on my way to get exhaust put on this week and have been looking all over for some sound files to compare for my 4.0 I think I've heard what I need to hear! :)

What muffler are you going to be going with?

Dan

the flowmaster original 40 sounded pretty good, the guys here at exhaust pros have done quite a few explorers ill get their feedback as well. I just dont wanna go with a rice burner loud whine or anything. Id rather have deeper and quiet then loud and whiney.

Which motor do you have? The SOHC or the OHV?

Dan

I've never really known for sure, I've just started getting into working on stuff the last few years and am new to everything Im not sure how to find out most have been saying its probably SOHC though.

I dunno now that I go back through them again your explorer sounds really nice. Some of the others were hard to tell is that an exhaust system or just a cherry bomb muffler?

Its a muffler I picked up from Pepboys for about $55 then I clamped it on and had a muffler shop bend a 2.5" tailpipe for me. So far I am happy with it, but I'm still wanting a little more. A little deeper under throttle would be nice, but at idle it sounds so much like a V8.

Dan

Ill see what I end up with after exhaust pros and tell you what I think of it.

Ok so after listening to all the sound clips, i'd say that over all the best sound for your buck if your looking for LOUD and THROATY Rumble would have to be a CherryBomb Muffler. So would any cherrybomb straight tube muffler give that sound or is there a specific one?? Would this one here work:

I had one of those, probably that same one and it sounded like the flowmaster, but didn't sound as good. Sounded ok, but not as good as it does now. Cherrybomb sells a chambered muffler, the PRO is the one I have. They also have other styles. Pepboys sells them and I believe Meineke does too..

This is the one I used. offset/center 2.5"

5.0 exhaust

has any one done a custom exhaust on the 5.0 would like to hear some:D

Here's a burn-out vid I did for the need for speed section.

2-1/4" to 3" y-pipe, 3" single to a 3" magna-flow cat, 3" single to a 2-1/2" magnaflow muffler and dumped.

Personally, way to much rasp for me; I'm gonna change it soon.

Its hard to hear over the tires screaming... Nice burnout tho:thumbsup:
