Late reply I know, but when I had my sport, same year and engine as yours, the best sound I got out of it was with the Cherry Bomb Pro. Similar sound to the FM 40, but it sounded slightly better to me. I ran mine with 2.5" pipe. I also hollowed out the rear cat, but I don't think it made much of a difference in sound. There should be sound clips in this thread and all over youtube of my old truck with that setup.

Dan

Maybe it sounded good, but a 2.5" pipe on a 4.0 could not have been beneficial to your performance. 2.5" is the highest I am considering on my '69 Cougar with a 5.8L.

Reading your signature and that post, I assume I insulted you. It's just my opinion; sorry. I just think that's a rather large pipe for the 4.0. If you have numbers that show improved performance, I'll change my opinion. I personally think a quiet V6 is the best sounding V6 but I have heard some louder that sound good (they were pushing over 300 hp, though).

No not insulted.... I started to explain my point then realized, that the truck in question was a SOHC engine, having a totally different sound and setup.

I don't have numbers, there's no point I have an OHV, which just a deathly slow engine to begin with. I have had true dual magnaflows on my 83 ranger that sounded good (to me), the cat was stopped up etc etc etc.

I think the only time a v6 sounds like total @$$ is when straight pipes are put on it.... then again I think it sounds horrible on a v8 too... but that's JMO.

Mine is a deep tone, not raspy (not bad for a $20 bill that included 6ft of pipe) .... it suits me for the time being... I'm hoping to change to a magnaflow later on.

Sorry to jump to a conclusion. Deep is good. That's why V8s can so easily sound good. Hard to do on a V6.

Thus why I am going with the dynomax super turbo, it is pretty quiet.

Didn't notice any difference in power in all the exhaust set ups I had, except when i ran straight pipes with no muffler. For the SOHC or OHV motors, a single 2.5" pipe will not be detrimental to performance.

The muffler shop I called won't really let me bring a muffler down, I have to use one of "his" knock off magnaflows. He said the dynomax will not be quiet, even though all the reviews lead me to believe it is.

And the dual in, single outlet is NOT a reversible. All the other super turbos that are single to single are. I called.

I climbed under, don't think the offset will fit due to the need for a y pipe and such.

EDIT: stopped past another shop, basically the concensus is noone will install anything but a dual in/single out muffler on my car. No one wants to fab up something with a Y pipe. Only quote I managed to get from this place was 215 for a factory replacement. Boo.

If none of the shops will let you use your muffler of choice, find different shops. I've had decent luck with the Meineke where I live, but they have a fantastic exhaust guy. Another option you can use is a magnaflow y-pipe.

Use that to convert to a single in, single out. Makes it that much easier to find a muffler that will work. There are some threads on here about using it. I think Afboy used it on his sport.

Ive gone to all the shops in my town. I could try a different place up the road. The issue with the y pipe is the dynomax is an offset inlet. I don't know if I have room to run the Y pipe and a pipe to adapt for the offset. The only center to center is 3" which is rather large to adapt to stock 2.25 inch pipes.

I've come to the conclusion I will either try this myself, or just glob muffler putty over the holes in my old muffler and put the heat shield back on and be done. This hasn't been a pleasant experience finding a muffler to fit.

I can't help with fitment but I can assure you the Super Turbo is pretty quiet. Any muffler guy that says otherwise has no experience with that muffler and if he says it so confidently, it just means he's lying about something he knows nothing about. Don't bother talking to that shop again for any type of work. It has a deeper sound than stock but nobody would consider it loud. Just sounds like I would have expected Ford to make a V6 truck sound like from factory.

The shops quote says it all. Offtrac and I both have the Superturbo, his with the resonator, mine without.
Either way, a very subtle tone without being obnoxious, raspy, or loud. Sounds great under acceleration.

Got the Dynomax super turbo installed. Muffler was 35 bucks, and it was 90 for him to fab a y pipe to deal with the dual to offset, and clamps, and fix my rear hanger. I am pretty pleased for a v6 i suppose. It is not loud but there is no mistaking it for a stock exhaust, which is the balance I wanted. Its really not noticeable at idle at all, or really under 2000 rpms for that matter(atleast from in the car). It gets a tad loud(er) in the 2500rpm range, which is where most mufflers tend to drone, or be loudest. Its not annoying, and I will grow used to hearing it as well. Above 3k rpms I like the sound, it smooths out and it is not all the loud. At 60 I couldn't really hear it. I want to test it at 70-75 still. The sport with the short wheel base makes for poor interior resonance and drone issues with exhausts, so we shall see.

I need to have someone drive it while I stand outside and listen. I've only heard the relative quietness from inside. Revving it with my door open makes it sound pretty loud, and it pops and gurgles a little bit when I get off the gas from revving. It is still breaking in, and seems smoother now than this morning. I will get clips when I can.

BTW, this is a 2.25" offset inlet, the stock dual 2.25" pipes run into a custom y pipe to meet the offset. The tail pipe is stock 2.25" with the resonator in place. Basically the muffler and Y pipe is the only change. This muffler is 4" shorter than the stock one.

The whole system is trash this dude did, I hope this guy goes out of business. He is ripping people off. It leaks terribly. He used 2 1/2 inch pipe to couple 2 1/4 inch pipe, used 2 1/2 clamps on the whole thing. The custom Y pipe has the nastiest welds ever, I dont think he knows how to weld, although it doesn't seem to leak, yet. The pipes are all ballooned out at the ends and leaky, and 2 clamps he used are broken/stripped. I couldn't get it apart because it is all smashed together. I am currently trying to putty it up for now. It is so ghetto. I am not going back there, I know I won't get my money back, and I don't want this goon to touch this again. Oh he used a band clamp to fix my exhaust hanger because he was too lazy to do it right. I am not a happy camper right now...

I did look at it when I picked it up but it was pouring and I didn't inspect it that much to see this.

EDIT: sorry for the rant, needed to vent. I will leave the info here just for the story haha, I took some of the anger out of it.

Well I've calmed down a bit. I just got muffler putty and tape and fixed up the connections. One clamp is still stripped, ill fix that later. Its much quieter without the leaking haha. Sucks to have someone rip you off, but I just need to move on with life. I puttyed the leak, and it should be fine. Doesn't look pretty but oh well. Hopefully I'll like the sound even better with it not leaking, ill know when it dries. The first drive with the new muffler should have raised flags when it sounded very much like my old car when the exhaust broke open. It had that leaking sound, but i've never heard the muffler so I thought that was just how it sounded. My gut was right.

When you get time, look them up on Google places and yelp and leave reviews for them.. It might help save someone from wasting money there too.. Really sucks when you find a crap shop.

Good idea, thanks. Its not worth my time to go back up there and talk to the guy myself. I'm going to do that review, and move on with life.

I like to do most work myself, but I didn't want to mess with this, its cold and I just had my wisdom teeth out. The mechanic I trust and does good work when I need it doesn't do exhaust.

Hello all, Im currently doing some repairs on my 99 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC and am going to do some exhaust upgrades. The stock exhaust comes down with dual pipes to the cats (placed in such a manner that dropping the tranny pan is a ROYAL PAIN) and then continues to a dual in single out muffler. I have an exhaust leak at the muffler and I think a go-kart sounds better and makes more noise than my explorer. Not happy.
Anyways, I had a brand new exhaust from a 2011 challenger srt8 392 given to me. I was thinking of using the x pipe and factory glasspacks in my exhaust. Any suggestions as to placement of these components? I was gonna put the x pipe right after the tranny crossmember and then put the two mufflers side by side right after it. Then run the two pipes right out back beside each other. Now if it isnt loud enough i might take the mufflers out that way I still keep the cats so I'm as legal as I can be ;)
Any suggestions or tips would be muchly appreciated.
