4.0 OHV Don't like Oil.

Allright, I've had my explorer for long enough for 2 oil changes, and noticed it HATES new oil. Just yesterday, (other than a somewhat high idle of 900rpm) my 1999 OHV Explorer was runnin great. Responsive, smooth, and most of all quiet.

That all changed when I decided to do it a favor and give it some new oil!

5W-30 Mobil 1 oil
1-301 Mobil 1 High Effenicy Filter
Lucus Oil Stabilizer

At idle it shakes, rattles, and roars. It happend once before, right after the oil change and SLOWLY faded away untill the change was due. The first time it happend, I hopped on here and searched High and Low and found that there is a service bulitin saying that a light deisiling sound may occur. Im skeptical.

This does sound like a diesel, infact.. alot like a desiel. It's that loud at idle. Under acceleration ---uhh-- not so much.

But it's an embarissing rumble that is untolerable.

Any information on why it does this, what I can do to quiet it up, or some support would make me feel alot better. I love the truck, I can't stand the sound!

Just curious..why the oil stabilizer? It won't help your motor and it definitely won't improve on synthetic oil...

why you add Lucus Oil Stabilizer?

except of Lucus Oil Stabilizer i can't see whats wrong with the car.

are you sure that you have the OHV engine because SOHC engines have the problem of rattling at 2000-3000 rpm due to timming chain issues.

I added the stabilizer, because I have only heard good things about it,and thought if it were a mechanical issue that it would help lubricate what is making the sound?

The first oil change I had ever made on it was straight 5w-30 Mobil 1 oil, with a FRAM oil filter. After hearing the sound I freaked, drained it, bought new oil and a more expensive oil filter and also poured in a little lucus. the sound slowly dissipated... after about 3000 miles.. now it's back, and it's ugly.

Wish I could record it some how.

Im sure its the OHV, I had the same engine with a 93 Ranger I had owned previously.

i know what your talking about i have the same problem with my OHV they call it the marble sound and ford says its from carbon build up in the combustion chamber and the only way to get rid of it is to take the head off and clean it but thats not a very simple task to do everytime you get your oil changed so i just deal with it

Doing a couple Seafoam cleanings might help. How many miles are on it? Do a search for Seafoam.

Seafoam through the intake? I have around 90K on the motor now. I seafoamed the intake a few months ago, through the PCV valve, maybe I'll try agian.

It's really bad. Is there a way to add a .wav file on hear so you guys could listen? or an Mp3? I'm sure that the noise is the marble sound that FORD claims is ok, the 'diesling sound' but there has to be something that can be done to correct it. Its just odd how it only happends after an oil change, then dissipates.. slowly. atleast.. thats what happend last time ..

Any other thoughts or ideas untill then would greatly be appreciated.
I really love my truck, and would hate to have to let it go because I think it may rattle itself apart

I agree that a carbon buildup in the combustion chamber may cause the noise that you are describing. However, I do not see why performing an oil change would cause the noise to become louder.

What is the history of the truck? How many miles? What does the old oil look like when you drain it? What do the spark plugs look like?

Put a real oil pressure gauge on it and see what the pressure really is. If it were mine, I would seriously consider pulling the valve covers and see what I could find.

I bought the thing in an auction, I don't know the history much more than that. It has about 90K and has a manual transmission.

The only thing other than the noise that isn't perfect, is it idles a little high, around 1000.. but thats a different isusse, one I do not care near as much about.

The old oil was a dark brown, nothing unusual, or no funny oders.

I replaced the spark plugs about 5000 miles ago, but I'll pull them out agian to take a look. I had done the seafoam treatment prior to the oil change... maybe it fouled them up? I don't know.

Im pretty certain it isn't the plugs, but I'm so anxious to get somewhere on this explorer, any suggestion you throw out there, is something I will go out and tackle.

To me, it sounds deeper, I hear it the best in the drivers side wheel well. Any thoughts on that? I'm geting ready to take off for school, but Im going to try to somehow get a recording after.

but if you think that maybe removing the valve cover might tell me something im all for it. What to look for?

I'm not suggesting the problem is with the spark plugs, but their condition will give you an indication of what's going on inside the combustion chamber.

Regarding the valve covers, I'd be looking for sludge.

If you are saying that it went bad when adding Mobil 1 then do another oil change going back to regular oil.

I had the same poblem with my SOHC, and i was using 5-30, Switch to 5-20 for the cold winter. It works. SO mcuch better. No diesel like sounds. It runs smoother too. i dont think you need oil stabilizer. Just swicth to the 5-20. Use that q advance turque ppower stuff. Its amazing. I lvoe it in myy truck. Try it and let me know. Like i said. It will work better!

You know, now that I think about it when I started using Mobil 1 mine started that kind of marbling sound at idle. It wasn't so loud that I would call it dieseling. I didn't pay much attention because of the fact that the OHV are notorious for making sounds. I switched back to regular oil for some other reasons I'll see if it still makes the sound.

My brothers Dakota had that problem with mobil ! too. He put regular oil in and had no problems after that.

Mobil 1 is excellent oil and I seriously doubt it is at fault.

i'm running synthetic oil the last 20000 miles on my 96 explorer and is running better than ever. no noises and it feels a lot smoother.

Agree 100%. Mobil 1 oil will not be the culprit.

Oh i NEVER said it was at fault. I think the viscosity is. I had 5w30 blend in there, and it did it, i switched to 5w20, and it went away. I just said the quaker state because thats whet i have. the 5w30 it not the right winter oil. I think its the fact its 5w30, not mobil 1. ive used that before too, and think its GREAT oil. I just decided to try this new stuff for fun, and i like it just as much. IM saying keep synthetic, do not switch back, use a lower # like 5-20 for winter!
