Just wondering if anoyne else was so irritated by sohc if they did an engine swap and changed over to 4.0l OHV
motor. I know it would be spendy but I am really annoyed with this engine and the lack of ford owning up to dud of a motor. If anyone has what did it cost to swap over?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

TIA

I think it would be much simpler and cheaper to get hold of a late SOHC from a wreck and fit that. No extra changes and a better engine. No wiring or computer change.

When did they make changes to the SOHC? As far as I knew they had recalls until 2002. And even if they didn't I'm sure Ford just used a "patch job" repair. Ford isn't known for owning up to, and fixing mistakes. I'd never want a motor that had a defect so bad it needed recalled.

I love my SOHC and all the interesting noises it produces!:p

if you were gonna go to all the trouble to do an engine swap, why not go with a 5liter? why spend lots of time/money only to take a step back?

So the motor makes some noises? I have never been bothered by it, and it goes 200,000 miles proven. I wouldn't worry about it so much. Toyota uses plastic chain guides in its engines, and we all know how reliable those motors are.

I would like to see that proof in writing. Plus if this motor is so great, why is ford changing the cam guides with a program? or why if its such a great motor, are they suggesting 1200.00 worth of work on my engine?? As far as the motor swap I believe the 4.0l ohv was the same one used in the ranger? If it is that motor has plenty of power for my sport and I never intend on pulling anything. In my opinion a V8 in a sport for normal driving is a waste.

A V8 in your Ex wouldn't be a waste. The V8 and OHV motor have an almost identical fuel economy and it is a more reliable motor than the SOHC or the OHV.

Well, actually it would be extra $$$ wasted buying a trans and t-case for the v8.

What is wrong with the engine that you want to swap it?

The vast majority of the problems I have had and heard of are annoyances rather than major repairs. No the SOHC is not the best but swapping sounds extreme.

I am more worried about the tranny than the engine.:(

Maybe my expectations are a bit high for a motor. I expect a motor to last at least 100,000 miles without any major mechanical problems. If ford had not covered the front guides I would have potentially spent more then 2000.00 bucks in the last three months to fix a problem that isn't about a noise but something that can essentially ruin the motor. I would consider a swap with a newer sohc off of a 01 or an 02, but I think even these newer motors are going to develope some of the same problems just few years down the road It would just delay the inevitable.
I have been pleased with ford products in fact all my autos I have been purchased by ford. And I think there was one recall that affected whatever ford product I had at the time. this model has had 5 or 6 recalls and one program.
If I would have known about the problems the sohc has, I NEVER would have bought an X with this motor. Other than the motor I am pleased with the drive and overall comfort of the X oh forgot about the blend door, that's another 500 to fix but other than that the X has been fine oh wait there was the rusty accumluator with the feam on it that caused premature failure and 250 to fix.... I do realize that things do wear out and need to be replaced with age but at 70,000 miles this motor should have at least 30,000 miles in before a mechanic has to tear into it. If I was working more I would dump it and get a baja..... Yes perish the thought

Let the flames begin

Ford is going downhill fast. That's why, if I get another Ex it will be with the old 302 and 4r70w. It's been awhile since any major changes which is a good thing. Ford has been hurting and has been taking the cheap and easy way out which means quality and reliability is on its way out.
