94 XLT 4.0 tow package?
I am so sick and tired of dealing with my 4.0/a4ld i dont know what to do. So heres the question is there a thread or can someone list out everything i would need to do it? Right know its sitting in our parking lot not being driven because of it. I can get the motor and trannie for 500$ a piece at the local salvage yard. Is it worth it? Would i still have 4x4? What motor mounts do i need? Whats the best transmission? Oh and im on a strict budged And im 16 trying to get something together to drive, and oh yeah its paid for too. how should i start? sell the old motor and trans first? What do i need to keep etc. Any help would be GREATLY apreciated
:D

The one thing i can say is , check craigslist for parts and prices ,see how much what you need is going to cost you and figure out if just a tranny swap and slight motor upgrades are easier on your wallet instead of 1000 in a motor and tranny , plus you have to spend more for adapters , i would weigh out your options on it before i bought anything , just my 0.2 cents and my opinion good luck on what you choose

You will need the motor, with all its parts, plus the wire harness and computer for a 5.0, plus a tranny that will bolt to your current transfer case, might need custom motor mounts and custom drive shaft. It is possible, but it isnt exactly easy.

The 4.0 is pretty damn good engine except for the gaskets, but the trans is crap. i would do my research before going with a new motor.

A good rule of thumb, take whatever it costs for the parts for the swap, engine, transmission..... then multiply that number by 3 or 4. Once you get it, there are fluids to change, tune-ups to do (at the very least, a rebuild is usually a good idea), all kinds of miscellaneous parts that you don't think of in advance, clamps, hoses, bolts, wire, connectors, exhaust and other last minute things to make it work. By the time you are done, you have spent 4 times what the engine and transmission cost you.

If you are really sick of the 4.0/a4ld, swap a manual transmission in. Your explorer will be a completely different truck, and it is a lot easier to do than an engine swap, especially for someone who is inexperienced. It is always a better idea to start learning on smaller/easier projects. If you still insist on going 5.0, look around this site, there are threads about it.

I was thinking about doing a manual but There is a good thread on here (cant remember the name) my biggest issue is finding the parts Theres only one salvage yard around here... that has the M50D and i would need the clutch pedal, shifter and a couple other things, how reliable is the M50d?
