How would I go about telling in my 96 XLT if I have the 242 or the 245?

Your 96 either has a OHV 4.0L pushrod V6 or a 5.0L Pushrod GT-40 V8.
In 1997 the Explorer was available with the 4.0L SOHC as well, but not in 96

It has the 4.0l in it, my questions was is it a 242 or a 245?

When ordering from Summit on engine parts it ask which one you have. My question is where and how do I find out?

I thought they were all the 245?

There is only one Ford OHV 4.0L 95 TM block, not sure of the exact displacement, I am not sure they they are asking....what are you trying to order?

Exhaust.

my guess is no matter which answer you give them they will both point you to the same exhaust system.

It is like when you go to Autozone and you want to get a new alternator the computer will ask them if your truck is 2wd or 4x4 and if it has AC or no AC, even though all answers will lead you to the same part number for the alternator.

When it comes to exhaust for a 96 Explorer you either have a V6 or a V8.
Also there are not many exhausts "kits" for your truck, have you considered just getting a muffler and having a shop do the work?

As for which engine thanks for the advice. And as for the kit vrs custom I had, but I was looking to keep cost down. Hopping to find a kit and do the install in a friends garage.

flowmaster makes a kit, i have one :p

and its 245 cubic inches. check your haynes manual (i know you have one, every good truck owner does.)

my guess is the older (91-94) exploder 4.0L were 242 CUbic inches, as thier pistons had a smaller dish in them (but then again i believe the combustion chambers in the heads wasbigger too so i dunno...)

But anyways, pretty sure its 245. As for exhaust, summit racing has a few. Or at leastthe summit one like i have

i though it was 247.

Technically, my haynes manual says 244...

ive read different numbers from different places, but the most common number i hear is 245.

According to Dead Link Removed it is 244cid. That article is also a pretty good reference on the differences and changes between the different model year 4.0s.

The inline 6's from the older f-150's was a 300. What kind of exhaust are you getting? Just a muffler,a catback, right up to the headers? I'd call a few local places and see what they say. Some places local will half ass hook something up so you can hear it run on the lift to see if the muffler sounds ok to you.

I coulda sworn it said it in the ford manual for the explorer for the 94, 245, ill go check momentarily.

and chiltons says 244, and alldata says 242 (if i remember right), and so on...

Its a 245 i talked to my uncle (ford mechanic) and he says the 245 is the engine in the explorers. (V6)
