I bought a newer Explorer (well new to me) and in buying this vehicle I knew it ran like poo and understood that it could be major as a engine or minor as a tstat. Well after some more diag, I found that is was not as major as a engine but not as minor as a tstat. As you can tell in the first pic this is a crack in the head. This just so happened to be where the head gasket was blown in pic number 3. I think this is the worse head gasket I have seen ever, and I have replaced ALOT.

Pic number 2 is another problem I had with the other head. As you can see the valve seat came out of the head and cause the valve to stay open and a result of this, the valve smacked the piston.

I am going to get a newer set of heads and bolt them on. I think the piston will be fine in this case.

On a side note: It seemed to be VERY easy to loosed the head bolts up. I think someone else replaced the heads at on time. The heads look alot cleaner than the block and the surrounding engine. I think when they installed these heads thet used some cheap reman heads and never tightened the head bolts down all the way.

If you want some other pics of the engine I can post them too.

Nice pictures... As they say the more the merrier... Although rebuilding heads and engines may seam like an every day no big deal to you, 85% of the members probably have not done so (so the more you document with text and pics the better). This will give insight and encourage some to tackle similiar jobs...

great idea^^^

Think I should post a "How To"? I could take lots of pictures. Really this job is not too hard and I think any one who can read and follow a basic intructions should be able to do this job. Took my less than 2 hrs to pull the heads, even if it took someone else 4 or 5 they would still be $$$ ahead.

I think a how to would be a great idea. :)

Yes, do it. Us non-mechanic types need more instruction than the manuals usually provide. ;)

I think a how-to on anything would be great. Head jobs aren't exactly to hard; had to do one on a Ford V-10 a few weeks ago. Just take time, patience, and you have to follow the rules.

wow, that was in bad shape. I have to do the heads on mine soon, I hope I can do it in 2 hours-that's fast.

Now I just need a 4.0l to do it on. Anyone near lower MI need head gaskets? You buy all the parts and I provide the labor FREE. Yes I said FREE!! I will do all the labor for free for this how to. Now only problem I see with this is: the heads are cracked and you need new heads, and a ride home. So if anyone would like this done and lives close let me know. It should be done easily in one day. And seems it is your vehicle I am working on, you can take all the pics and stay clean while I work and get dirty.

have fun they are a blast! but definately not the worse, compared tosome other motors

Good lord that head gasket is BAD. I too have done a bunch and never seen anything like that. BTW I have the same air ratchet and its GREAT. I just dont get why snap on has the mufflers on their stuff. I havent met anyone that actualy uses them. Tried mine once just to try it. heh
