I bought a newer Explorer (well new to me) and in buying this vehicle I knew it ran like poo and understood that it could be major as a engine or minor as a tstat. Well after some more diag, I found that is was not as major as a engine but not as minor as a tstat. As you can tell in the first pic this is a crack in the head. This just so happened to be where the head gasket was blown in pic number 3. I think this is the worse head gasket I have seen ever, and I have replaced ALOT.
Pic number 2 is another problem I had with the other head. As you can see the valve seat came out of the head and cause the valve to stay open and a result of this, the valve smacked the piston.
I am going to get a newer set of heads and bolt them on. I think the piston will be fine in this case.
On a side note: It seemed to be VERY easy to loosed the head bolts up. I think someone else replaced the heads at on time. The heads look alot cleaner than the block and the surrounding engine. I think when they installed these heads thet used some cheap reman heads and never tightened the head bolts down all the way.
If you want some other pics of the engine I can post them too.
