has anyone tried making or had a shop build a 4.0L to small block adapter?
do you think it is possible?
what size is the flywheel on the 4.0 standard?
and is it easy to swap in the clutch pedal assembly from a ranger or 5 speed explorer?
oh,and are the mazda 5-speeds a good tranny, and what is the first and reverse ratios of it?
sorry for all the questions as i am a explorer newbie...i've mostly dealt with the big ford stuff and toyota's!

nobody here knows this stuff?

Nobody that I know have has build such an adapter. Most people who would go through the trouble would go ahead and put a V8 in.

The 5 speeds aren't the best trannies in the world but they are better than the E#xplorer auto's. The clutch pedal is part of the bracket for the brake pedal, so you just need to swap in a clutch/brake combo from a Ranger/Explorer.

ya,but the v-8's cause so much more problems(like making me lose the a/c!)and over heating and stuff....plus the weaker 4.0 would not break as much stuff.i'm a throttle jockey,it seems!
i'm thinking of swapping in the mazda 5 speed, and having an adapter to my dual toy t-cases made.but i really like the gearing of the t-18,and i kinda want to go with bigger t-cases too!i want to be able to beat this thing hard, without worrying!
thanks for the reply's

do you want a manual tranny? what about an auto??? advance adapters makes a kit to mate the 4.0 to a 700r4 which has a lower first gear than the normal auto tranny and is a little more stout...i have no idea what tcases bolt up to it though

oh,ya,i meant to ask about that!
i don't really like autos, but it might make a nice package!
does anyone here have this tranny behind thier 4.0?

a couple people do Jefe has one and diffwhackdaddy has one too, and i think there are a couple others......jefe did a pretty nice writeup when he installed his, chech it out

4.0L OHV options:
C5 automatic (3 speed)
A4LD (stock)
700R4 with adapters ($$$$)
Mazda 5 speed
WC T-5

The 5.0L is not a weaker engine then the 4.0L, there is no reason to lose your A/C with a 5.0L conversion, also I agree if you want a good ratio T case, a good ratio transmission, and alot of power (throttle jockey) consider the 5.0L/C6/dana 20 conversion.

Or stick with the 4.0L OHV, use a C5 or Mazda 5 speed, and get yourself an Atlas II T case.

If you are a do it yourselfer and like to cause headaches you can also build a BW 1354 doubler :)

no,i meant the less powerfull 4.0 wouln't break so many parts!
you thinkthe air could be kept with the 5.0 swap ?it looks like it would be real tight with it..
i would like some info on the 1354 doubler!i was considering a 203/205 doubler, but they are huge!

the BW 1354 doubler:
therangerstation.com

Look for Klune V

The 5.0L came in the explorer with A/C in 97+

do you know if they changed the position of the big box for it in the engine compartment?

Yeah the heater box in the V8 truck is different, but you can cut and modify yours to clear, its the valve cover that gets in the way.

cool!
i think the v-8 is the way to go at this point!my toy was pretty well known around my parts for it's sound more than anything(and the color was loud also!)
so i better keep it on that program!!
i think i am going to cut the roof at the back windows, and try to graft the hatch back on there for a sport-trac look..what do you think?

do you know if there are any pics of these trucks?
i have to seal it back off somehow, cause it's cold here in igloo land!! :D

Most people who do this get a canvas top made that buttons on the truck, and has clear side panels. Looking in your sig. you may have mistook some info. The 5.0 V8 into an Explorer is an easy swap, but the general consensus is that the 351's wouldn't fit. I don't remember why. It may actually fit, but like you stated before, you may have to lose the AC, and worry about overheating. I know the 4.6 is too wide, and I think I recall reading on here that it was a height issue. If thats the case a cowl hood may do the trick. I'm sure someone with a more definate answer will chime in.
