One question for clarification, is the "traction" bar you're referring to the infamous "5th shock"?

On each side there should be a link about 20" long going from the top of the axle, forward to the frame. This is an anti wrap link.

If you want to keep those you need to re-gear your v8 rear axle, if you don't have, or want to keep them ( some v8 explorers
don't have them) you can get any 410 geared explorer axle.
Of course you need a front diff also. 410 are a little harder to find, but are out there.

Edit, as with anything these control links have their pros and cons. They will limit flex in the rear, however, they will also hold the pinion angle more secure under load. I kept mine

Yep.. I've got 'em. So I'll need an axle out of a 1999-2001 V8 with those brackets and 4.10 gears. Not a difficult search at all. I suppose adding trac-loc is just being greedy.. LoL

Come down here in a few months and I'll sell you my 4.10 diffs, complete with LS. I've got 4.10's in my 99 that some day I will convert to V8. I have a spare 3.73 V6 rear I plan to use in my spare Mercury, so that its rear will go into my 99 mail truck.

BTW Jon, thanks I think for the spare front diff I got from you how many years ago? I got my "new" front diff out, and it is virtually dry. The spare I built ages ago will go in this 98, and the original will go back into the Mercury. Spare parts are good to have when you need them.

Now that is a gift. I really don't have the funds to pay for a set of diffs right now but as yours won't be available for a few months that will give me time to save up.... Uhhh... How much should I save up? :)

I gave $150 as I recall(in 2007) for the spare rear I bought to get the axles and brakes. My 99 was wrecked when I got it, and near the end I discovered that the axles were also bent. A whole rear end isn't too bad to buy from a JY, but removing them is if you have to do it on site.

The front isn't a large component, but it has a bunch of parts to remove before you can get one out. So the rear is actually easier to get from a JY, than a front diff.

Look around and see if you can find a 4WD V6 Explorer in the 98-01 years. A lot of those will have 4.10's. Look at the door jamb tags, look for the axle code, you want to see a letter, not a number. The LS diffs should all be letter codes I think.

If you want to keep the rear anti wrap bars, you will probably need to regear your rear diff, or, weld brackets to the 410 axle.

You could find a open carrier ( well known person sells them on ebay) , regear it to 410, and stick in a lunchbox locker. Then you just need to find a 410 front diff

Define "lunchbox" locker.. I really would like to keep the process as "plug and play" as possible.

Instead of LSD clutches that don't really give you true 2wd when you need it, this device will lock both axles under load in a straight line. Install of this into a properly "set up" carrier is pretty simple.

It can only be installed in an "open" carrier though. Spartan makes a locker that fits into the Limited slip carrier, but it is 2 times the cost.
