4.56
.46 difference ;)

4.10's would be great for 31s, maybe 32s. IMO, 33's and up work great with 4.56...
Check out this calculator for gear changes. You want to change gears so that you are geared atleast as high (numerically) as stock, ideally higher to compensate for the extra weight and drag of the bigger tires.

ok so 4.56 i would be better off.. can the physics be explained??

Go 4.56, you can never have TOO much gear in 4 wheeling.

ha alright thanks guys.. just trying to get preference.. check the next thread.. looking to get opinioin!!

i didn't feel like changing my gears, i have 4.10 and 33's, it feels pretty different but i just got used to it.

i'd go with the 4.10s from what i understand, your gonna get better gas mileage compared to the 4.56, but if your gonna be offroad for the most part i'd go with the 4.56 more torque i believe...somebody correct me if im wrong...i

i gots v6 3.73 LS & 33's...i dont think shes gonna last much longer if i dont swap gears...

Axle ratio is the revolutions of the driveshaft or pinion gear compared to the revolution of the tires or ring gear. The mechanical advantage is 4.56 divided by 4.1. Therefore, the difference in engine RPMs is also a multiplication of the same factor.

The seat of the pants answer is 4.10 for fuel economy and pavement, 4.56 for performance and off road. I have 4.56 ratio with 33s on my 91 X and 4.1 ratio with 31s on my 04 Ranger. Your driving habits should help you make the choice.

i wouldnt say 4.10 only for fuel economy and pavement...for the occasional offroading it seems it would be ok...?

ok sounds good.. well for the FORD 96 X we are looking at 8.88 right.. cause they are all over ebay and want to bid.. unless someone wants to sell me some 4.10s or 4.56s

As mentioned 4.56s will give your more power vs 4.10s and thus be better for Off-roading and towing. Many explorers with the towing package came stock with 4.10s. As such stepping up a few tire sizes and 4.56s would be the ideal choice. IMO you should get 4.56s with 34" tires. I'd only get 4.10s if you mainly stay on road, don't tow often, don't plan on any tires larger than 34", and do alot of highway driving. Re gearing is expensive so you want to get it right the 1st time.

Who is going to do the gear installation?

well

well i dont know who is going to do the gear install.. why do you ask??

well it is my daily driver so i figured i would put 4.10s in.. but i will be running 34's for sure!!
soo that change any bit of your choose for me??

put 4.56's. 4.10's will still kill your gas milage. people don't understand an engine is better off at 2500 rpm with a light load than at 2000 rpm with a heavy load. trust me, i know. Go 4.56.

I asked because I didn't know if you were going to do it or find a shop. If your going to find a shop I start looking before you even get the gears to see how much an install is going to cost.. New R&P installs can run $300+ per axle so you'd be looking at $600+ just in labor. Installing new gears takes some specialized tools and know how to set them up correctly so they don't eat themselves or howl like a banshee.

I was in the same boat as you are now. I kept thinking 4.56s would be too much and I'd be winding out the tach on the highway. But the reality is 4.56s bring performance back to a little better than stock. I have 4.10s with 33s and they alot better than running my old 3.27s with 29.5" tires, but I don't have any extra power to tow with. Now that I've had my 4.10s for a few years I can honestly say I should have gotten 4.56s. As mentioned re gearing can easily cost $1K+ so getting it right the 1st time is key.

Some very good points. If I were you, with 34s, I would go with 4.56 ratio, it is a lot more fun, and the real reason it kills your milage is cause how much fun it is to mash the skinny pedle, but I am not you.

Your X has a Ford 8.8 31-spline axle rear end. The front end I belive is a standard cut Dana 35, so that setup would not be exactly what yu need. I would suggest that you find an installer first, because they may have a preference in what brand of gears to use.
