I am a poor college student and I want to put a 4" lift on my 1993 explorer. I am new to the 4x4 arena of cars but not to cars in general so I don't know much about lifting but I believe I am familiar enough with cars to put the lift on myself. What is the cheapest and easiest way to lift my explorer without having the price effect trail worthiness? Is there more to it than adding a set of shackles in the back, longer springs in the front, shocks all around, and maybe extending the break lines. And how big of tires can you stuff under a 4" lift? As I said I am new to this and I am looking for some good advice?

Fenderguy,
Do you mind me asking how much you paid for your lift kit? And I was reading that the maximum recomended tire size for a trailmaster 4" lift is 31". Did you 33 and 35 tires run well or did you make modifications to the fenders.

I got the kit from 4 whell parts wholesalers at one of their "big sales" it was $1100 . For the 33's no modifications were needed. For the 35s i bent up the rear so they would not rub and the front I have the fiberglass fenders. I don't rub anywhere anymore.

i have about 4 1/2 inches of lift on mine. it is both a 3 inch body lift and a 1 1/2 inch suspension lift comprised of a coil spacer and longer shackles in the rear. it was easy to do but took alot of time. this is the cheapest way (i'm in college too) this might just be your best option. it works real well for offroading. just an option for you.

Bigcheck,
Where did you buy your shackles and coil spacers? Do you need longer shocks for the suspension lift? I was thinking that if I did that I might put air shocks on or is that a bad idea. I had a 65 Mustang before my explorer and I couldn't get front air shocks for it so I don't know if you can for Explorers either. Thanks for you help.

InNeed,
If you use a body lift you won't need any new shocks. There is a good chance your existing shocks will handle up to 2" of lift. The Rancho's I have are for a stock vehicle, but they will travel a bit further for small suspension lifts.

jons right, you wont need new shocks. i got the coil spacers from the ford dealer. they are from a 92 f-150 2wd. the shackles are form desert rat. http://www.desertrat.com

yoiu can fit 33's with the lift that i have. i went with 32's cause you get a little more room for travel. look at my profile and you can see some pics. good luck
