I had a vibration and finally tracked it down to the front drive shaft.

After pulling the front DS everything was as smooth as silk.

I changed both u-joints and reinstalled the DS today.

The vibration did not change.

Do I have a bad DS?

I read where the front DS used with the 4406 had a relatively high failure rate. Not when put in Gen2's, but in their stock locations.

There's a lot of head scratching going on here.

Check the bolts that attach the rear driveshaft to the transfercase. .

It uses a slip yoke.

If you mean the rear of the DS, then I did check them.

I guess I should mention that the front pinion yoke has been drilled out for u-bolts instead of straps.

Maybe I need to try a new pinion yoke.

Are you using a FD with one ujoint at the transfer case?

I know some people get away with one but I really like double cardan drive shafts like the early first gen EX had.

My double cardan is 100% smooth and the double cardans that are under my lifted 79 bronco work quiet and smooth and they are even shorter then the EX shafts.

Just a thought.

EDIT..... U bolts are better IMHO then straps and should in no way make it vibrate.

My 79 has u bolts front and rear and they Have worked perfect for 36 years. The next time I have my front DS off I will look into using u bolts on the EX. I hate those tiny little front DS bolts, a ubolt would be much better.

Yes, it's out of an Expedition with a single u-joint at the T-case and at the axle.

Here is a picture of my early 1st gen DS with a #627 flange yoke installed. You need to add the #627 flange to the double cardan side.

So a 2nd gen double cardan from a 96 would or would not work?

MT

It would need the same flange yoke installed. It just so happens I was given a 1st gen DS and that worked well.

I just happen to have one from a 96 V8 coming.

It appears to have the correct yoke on it.

If not, I have at least 3 of them.

Fortunately it's easy to rebuild and install the yokes with my little 12 ton press.

Thanks

Had a major brain fart today, the 2nd gen DS will not bolt up to the 4406. They have a CV with 6 or 8 bolts. The first gen has the double cardan and with the flange yolk I posted earlier it will then fit.

Hopefully the above is a picture of the 96 DS that I have coming.

The picture is of a double cardan with a 4 bolt yoke attached.

The description states that it connects to a 4 bolt output shaft.

I thought that Ford switched to the CV style midway through 97.

The picture didn't work.

Correct, I have a 96 front driveshaft with its transfer case in my shed that I was running before I did the V8 swap

OK, Good to know!

Found a 627 flange , 80s t-bird , my friend has a massive driveshaft collection, so I'm gonna use the 96 front driveshaft in my V8 sport that will have a e-shift 4406 very soon

I have a couple extra flanges if you end up needing one.
