Hey guys, I am re-posting in the CORRECT ;) area of the forum with some updated news on my 4R44E. I've got a '95 Ranger with the 2.3l and 165k on it. Ok so, while driving home form my ladies house a couple of weeks ago, I lost overdrive while going 55 MPH. Pulled over and checked the fluid, good to go on level and no burnt smell. Put a little extra into it (just a blob or two) then discovered I had no reverse. Put the truck into OD and I limped home in first, but it never wanted to shift into second, just revved through the roof as it was trying, and I had the flashing OD off light the whole way. While my brother and I were messing with it the other day, we found the fluid to be low, we added some and the truck would shudder into R and then engage but whenever you pressed on the gas it would act like it wanted to die. Took it down the road in OD, shifted fine from 1st 2nd 3rd then OD-strange... Pulled into a driveway to turn around and go home-no reverse...strange again ;) While going home, not far, just a few houses up the road, it wouldn't shift into 2nd while in OD again. So we shifted it manually into each gear with no problems. Pulled back into the driveway, found to still have no reverse gear and we couldn't even get it to do the shuddering thing again. Last night I went out and pulled the pan, found that there was trans fluid on the cross-member and parts of the pan. (over-pressured?) and found absolutely no chunks of anything, just a good amount of sludge on the magnet, even the fluid looked great.

So. I have read the excellent diary on the 5R55E VB rebuild and would like to know if this is where I should head with this problem. I didn't take the VB out last night or the filter but I noted the locations of all the solenoids (thanks to the awesome VB diary by Glacier). My brother seems to think that we should pull out the entire trans, because he's thinking that I have a bad torque converter. No offense to my bro, but I'm not prepared for that job, seeing as we have only Saturday afternoon and Sunday to check things out. My suspicions are, from my knowledge gained from Glacier's VB diary either one or more solenoids or the reverse servos or some or all of the gaskets. Would it be possible to pull the VB out in my driveway then check the solenoids and servos? I know the resistance I'm looking for with the solenoids but he mentioned how to check the EPC and TCC with 12v power and brake cleaner, how do I do that without electrocuting myself ;)? I'll probably be replacing the EPC and we'll be doing the TSB fix. I don't have access to a code reader, (Autozone's $150 loaner wouldn't read the trans codes and I couldn't afford the $427 dollars O'Reilly's wanted to loan theirs out that can read them and I can't really move the truck due to my fears of making something worse) so I'm kaput on reading any codes.

I hate to just tear into it without a code reader, but thanks to all the knowledge from Glacier and others gained on this site I feel like I know this trans inside and out lol. Also, how do I see if the servo is bad? I saw in one post about it being as hard as a rock...

If you guys can help point out anything I'm missing it would be MASSIVELY appreciated, and yes I'm getting ready to buy a membership to your guys' site for all the great info and for the fact that I've decided to keep this Ranger even with the tranns problems and do my best to fix it up since it really is such a nice little truck. Its got 165k on it, I payed $75 bucks for it and had to fix the timing and some other small things but it's been a great little go-getter up until a couple of weeks ago. (Been driving it for 6 or 7 months) So I'm not afraid to put a little money into it seeing that I payed less than a hundred dollars for it.
Thanks in advance, and please give me some advice on this job!

Thanks, Cory. :salute:

Updates

Seems I'm talking to myself, but...:thumbdwn: in the spirit of documentation here are some updates on my trans issues. Dropped the VB out of this beast and everything seems in order, no gunk or clogged EPC filter. Checked all of the solenoids with a voltmeter for resistance and with 12v. All of them seem to be in specs and clicking away, though I'm sure that doesn't mean all is well for them, especially the TCC and EPC. All of the springs and what-not were in the correct position and, to my surprise nothing fell out when I removed the separator plate and gasket. The gasket also looks fine. Upon further inspection I noticed that the reverse servo cover seal/ring looked out of shape. A little blown out in one spot. Could this be related to my no reverse woes? I forgot to note the position of the servo cover; which way the sloped section is supposed to go. So if someone could point me to a picture or something that would be much appreciated.
If ANYONE would like to chime in with some suggestions, I would be forever in your debt...(GLACIER HELP ME!!!:D)
Thanks, Cory :salute:

Greets,

I have mainly been researching the earlier version of the tranny the a4ld, which has a known issue with the low reverse servo , seals leaking I believe specifically...which can cause rev issues, as well as delayed engagement in low....

you've prob seen this already: http://216.198.221.184/forums/showthread.php?t=61579

And here's some troubleshooting info from sonnax : http://www.sonnax.com/system/pdfs/110/original/TS6-BW-106-109.pdf?1289926275

And a thread on something similar from another forum http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/f416/no-reverse-tranny-199811.html

As far as reading codes goes, if they are stored codes you can usually use a jumper wire and count the flashes of the indicator light, or sometimes use an ohm meter and count the sweeps of the needle...not sure with a 95 ranger but I have used the flashing light method on my 94 ex...

Not sure if any of that helps.... but I hope you have Good Luck with fixing your issue!

Thanks for the reply!!

Hey, Ragga, thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it!! Thanks for the links too and yes I've seen them all. Researching this trans has sort of become my second job hahaha...what a nightmare...

Well, today we put the valve body back on and filled her back up with tranny fluid. Got the pan back on and went to O'Reilly's to get their loaner code reader for $429 plus tax...eeek. The reader found a no reverse engagement error, which I'm assuming is just a generic DTC for no reverse. We returned the code reader and got my moolah returned.
From here, who knows what's going to happen, my brother seems to think it's the torque converter, so I guess I'll drop the $80 bucks for a new one. Maybe the TCC solenoid too, both of our suspicions are pointing to the torque converter in one way or another; you can actually feel it locking and unlocking. I realize this could be due to low line pressure or something related to the EPC solenoid/valve also.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see... more updates when we tear into it next weekend!!! Thanks again, Ragga.

Thanks, Cory :salute:

NP Cory;-),

I know what you mean about the research...I have been doing the same...seems like there is only so much that can be learned from reading tho....wish I had more mechanic skills....mostly I am learning from my mistakes it seems;-) Let us kno how it goes...even if you don't get a lot of replies.....you never kno who will come along just like Us looking for an answer...maybe what you post will help someone out!

Just doing a little bumpage here and letting anyone know who might be interested that I've got the 4R44E ATSG manual on the way for $31 with shipping from:

http://www.onlinetransmissionparts.com/servlet/the-352/ATSG-Manual-for-Ford/Detail#itemadded

After I'm done with it I'll probably sell it to anyone for cheap if they want it, so yeah.
Replacing the filter and pan gasket is next on the list with this bad boy at the advice of a trusted family friend that had the same truck as mine with the same problems, turned out to be a plugged filter. Wishful thinking, wishful thinking.... ;) So this weekend some action will definitely be taking place on this Rescue Ranger. Last weekend was just too darn cold :(
