Greetings! I just purchased a 98 Ranger, 3.0, Auto, 2WD... I got it cheap because it has no reverse. In addition I have no engine braking in L1. I've gone through some of the basics, fluid level, shifter adjustment and all is good. I lowered the pan and filter today. No parts in the pan. I then removed the reverse actuator hoping to find a damaged seal or something. I found that the rod end of the actuator seems broken or damaged. With the actuator out I used a thin plastic rod to try and actuate the band manually. There is a loose part in there.

My questions are:
-Is there is more to the actuator as I cannot find a good photo?
-Should there be a spring behind the actuator? The 4LD manual shows one.
-Is there something between the band and the actuator that might seem to be a loose part?
-How do I post a photo from my C drive?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Well to post photos get a photobucket account. Put your pics on there. Then copy the img code to here

Sounds like maybe a broken reverse band or broken servo tip. So you are saying, when you probe with the plastic rod, the band is loose, no spring tension?

I think the 5R has no spring in the reverse servo, but I don't know about the 4R.

Thanks for the response... I did find out that the 4R does not have a spring in the low / reverse band actuator.
Since my post I have confirmed that the low / reverse band is broken. I am in the process of re-building.

I'd also like to say that ALL AMERICAN FORD in Hackensack, NJ jerked me around with the re-build kit. They told me over the phone it was $245 ( I did confirm twice that we were talking about a rebuild kit and not a seal kit) and when I took a couple of hours off of work so I could go there, order and pay for it I was told that it is $410 with tax.
