I'm doing a 5.0 ranger swap and am struggling to find a transmission and am down to 3 possible solutions and want guidance towards the best solution

1) Remove the front drive shaft and modify the gear box so there's no chain to the front shaft

2) Rebuild/convert the whole transmission from 4wd to 2wd

3) Drive 400 miles for a 2wd transmission that may not even work.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, welcome. You can remove the front drive parts with minor hassle, but it will include breaking(taking apart) each CV axle to keep the outer portion installed. The trans you should maintain your 4R70W if you think it's good. To change the older Ford trans to 2WD is a basic thing, any trans builder can do. The output shaft and output housing are different from 2WD to 4WD/AWD. You have to disassemble the entire transmission to swap those two parts.

Then you will need a longer 2WD drive shaft, and you can sell the AWD BW 4404 transfer case. If you are working with the cousin Rangers to the Explorer, then you might keep the 4WD instead, swapping a manual 4WD BW 4406 transfer case in as well. That BW 4406 swap has been done many many times here, dig into that.

Convert your trans to the rwd output shaft and tailhousing

The gear reduction in the transfer case low range is great for when you need to move something super heavy.
