Need a little help tracking down a problem that I am having with the 4wd on a recently purchased 97 explorer. I took it to a local mechanic but he could not track down the problem.
Here is what the symptoms are, when turning in 4wd(low and high) it makes a screeching noise from the front end. This sound doesn't occur when the vehicle is in AWD or going straight in 4wd. The mechanic change the transfer case fluid and noted that he didn't see any metal on the magnetic tip of the plug. Also, he said it will not make the sound when turning the wheels when the vehicle is on the lift. No wronging lights on or blinking.
Keep racking my brain, on why it would not make the noise with the engine weight off the front end. The vehicle is in very good shape besides this issue. Seems like the mechanic has given up because he has requested for me to pick the car up. Any thoughts on where to start on tracking down the issue?
