4WD warning lights.

my 99 explorer xls 4x4 has started flashing 4wd hi and 4wd low when i start and periodically when i drive. i almost never use 4wd. does this indicated a transfer case problem or something else? if transfer case, what happens if i ignore it. money is very tight. thanks

My 95 does the same thing and will not go into 4 wheel high or 4 wheel low. I've replaced the GEM and it still does not work.

could be a fuse ? maybe .. or even like a short to the case

I have not looked for codes yet. Tomorrow I will (when it warms up outside). I've looked for fuses and shorts in the wiring and found none.
