I was given this truck and its got a few problems, but I'll post this one first. I want to get this truck out on the beach soon but the 4X4 is acting up. Supposedly it was looked at and they couldnt figure out what was wrong but I thought I'd post up on here first before I tackle the problem. I engage the 4x4 it clunks into place and the torque is applied to the engine however the front tire wont engage. Same in 4lo. I gave it a shot in the snow and had someone look at the tires as I punched it and only the rear spun. When in 4x4 hi and lo I get a whinning or a wizzing noise from the front tire, could this be the hubs? Also which front tire gets the power when in 4wd? Thanks for any help!!

if the driveshaft is spinning, and all else seems normal i am going to say you have autohubs and they are gone... best thing to do is convert them to manual hubs..... http://www.explorer4x4.com/tips2.html#hub

I havnt had a chance to look under the car while its running to see the shaft spin but I'm pretty sure it is. I'll give that conversion a shot if it is the hubs. Thank you.

99.9% of the time it is the hubs. If you are getting the 4x4 lights on and you can hear/feel the clicking/clunk when you press the buttons, then hubs are shot. I'm attaching another site with great maintenance info for the first gen Ex. Bookmark it, you will need it! You may find fixes to your other problems on there as well.

Welcome to the site and good luck!

 Thank you for the site. I'm sure its going to get me out of a bunch of problems. I'm def. planning on manual hubs, it doesnt look or sound that hard. Which wheels get power? For both the front and back? Thank you!

Unless you have a limited slip or locker diffy in the rear, the wheel with least resistance gets the power - so yes, with open diffys you really only have 2wd in 4WD - one front one rear.

TPLYNCH thank you for the info. How hard is it to install lockers in the front and back? Is it easier then installing an lsd. From what I've seen there not exactly easy to install/change.
