Auto-hub 4x4 problem

Have you tried the diagnostic in the rear of the vehicle by the rear tank to see if it is the module or the motor?

Yes, I tried that first. It blinked (meaning the problem is the motor if I'm not mistaken). I had forgotten about that. I guess that means the hubs couldn't be the problem. I just thought it was pretty coincidental that I got the problem as I was test driving the hub fix.
Also, I went to look at the position sensor that is on the short gray cylindrical piece that connects to the motor. The picture on Dr. Bob's page shows it taken apart. Mine looks like one solid piece. I assume mine is different or I have to pry it apart or something.

Matt- Thanks to you and the others contributing to this thread I was able to put my front drive back in service. I suspected it wasn't working the past couple of years, pushing my wife out of a snow bank couple of weeks ago, I could see it wasn't! I had lights so guessed, for starters, it was the hubs. Disassembled them, man, how do they get so cruddy, they're nearly sealed units!? Nothing was broken so based on your discussions thought I'd explore the 'shim' route. Using the hub/rotor mating flange as a reference plane did some measurements on the cam pocket depth and the cam follower extension, looked like it would take at least a 16th inch shim.(we're all trying to recreate the original cam clearances, wonder what they were?). Functionally it doesn't matter which side of the cam you put the shim on, either behind the cam on the axle spindle or in the hub between the cam follower and the 'plastic' inner gear cage.I chose to put it behind the cam on the axle spindle as there is minimal sliding movement there and therefore less concern on what material you use.I'm out in the sticks so use what's handy, in this case some plastic/nylon? material, about a 16th inch thick, it was the thickest shim I could put in and still get the C clip seated back on the axle spindle. I had no thrust washers installed behind the cam, only the 'splined' washer outboard of the cam.
So far, it's working great, though I haven't a clue whether it was cleaning the hubs or installing the shim that did it.

I'm glad to hear you got the hubs working again! I *think* mine work. (We'll know for sure when I get the transfer case working again) I can't imagine the number of new auto hubs Ford has sold when it wasn't necessary.

Hello everyone, I am glad to hear all the success stories regarding auto-hubs. I have lost my Internet privileges at work so I will not be here as often as I would like.

I really miss Internet access at work, I feel like something is missing.

HEY BRAD, I have a extra set of spacers. Don and I are working on a price tag. Therefore, if you are still interested you let me or don know.

hi there i was just reading all the notes of the hubs, and thanks for all the help! i will try to fix mine this week, i thught it was a lost cause, but i see the light now lol. and here i went all winter with no 4x4, love this site keep up the good work.

Maybe that's why the US is THE most disgruntled work force in the world out of ALL the "industrialized" countries.

Abusing the internet when you should be working is one thing...I never have a problem if my guys are checking email, writing an email etc., especially if their work is getting done, they're on lunch break, etc.

Remember when we said, WOW, the Japanese work SO many hours...they don't have time for friends and family and personal time!!!

Well, we've surpassed them...and now we scratch our heads wondering why we don't have time for friends and family and personal time. And why we're so miserable.

We're on a path to nowhere.
