Which is the #1 cylinder on 97 explorer 5.0 awd? And what is the easiest way to get it to tdc? Changing the camshaft synchronizer and can't seem to find tdc.

If you clean the harmonic balancer off real well you will see some timing marks. They line up with a pointer on the crank sensor

Remove the spark plugs to free the compression, turn engine by hand while a helper holds their thumb on the #1 spark plug hole, trying to plug it off.

While you are turning the engine, at some point you will hear air spray out around the helpers thumb. This should be the compression cycle. Now refer to the pointer and rotate the engine until it lines up on 0. You can also slide a long pencil into the spark plug hole and slowly move engine back and forth until the pencil is sticking out most, on the compression stroke.

Once there, stick the tool on the snsor drive unit, and drop it in keeping the tool in place. Try to keep the connector plug facing forward.

You may need to remove the tool to get the oil pump drive shaft to cooperate. That's ok, just get the synch unit in, then rotate it until the tool goes back on again. as long as the connector part is within 7-5 o:clock, all should be fine.

#1 is the cylinder closest to the front on the passenger side. remove the spark plugs, crank the engine by hand using a ratchet on the harmonic balancer bolt. put your finger over the #1 spark plug hole. when you feel the air being pushed out (indicating you're on the compression stroke) stick a screw driver or metal rod in the spark plug hole until you feel it hit the top of the piston. carefully continue turning the crank shaft until the rod stops moving. that's TDC. this is much easier to do with a buddy.

Do I need to remove all plugs or just the #1 plug?

you wont be able to spin the engine by hand unless you remove them all. good time to change them.

tip: go through the wheel well and remove the splash shield to get at the plugs easily.
