5.0 project in N.M.?

I have been reading all this talk about the v8 conversion and it is about time I start thinking what to do w/my X. I am really wanting the 5.0 but have no knowledge about how to do any of it, or even where to start. I was wondering if there is anyone in N.M. that might be willing to help in the planning stages, or if there is a reliable shop that has done it or can do it. I have little time as a full time student and work part. I was thinking of getting a job at napa/autozone to help carry the cost. Anyone interested in assisting/teaching hands on in Alb. N.M.?

I could probably lend a hand every now and then for wrenching on it. I myself have no experience with a 5.0 swap into an Explorer but I have done/helped on some swaps before. Drop me an email if you want to.

P.S. - You just missed the albuquerque xplor get together and wheeling trip to the westside on saturday! I didnt know another person from Albuquerque was on here. I will let you know next time!

Although considered by some a walk on the beach the 5.0L - "X" swap is costly and time consuming even if you have the experience. If you do not have the friends with the experience consider finding a shop in your area to do the swap. Talk to a shop or a number of shops, find out if they have done this type of swap before and what they require from you other than the vehicle.
Then, talk to the shop some more, my last project has taken over a year so far and and that was just to get all of the info together and order the necessary parts, now the fun begins.

But talk to people, either here on the site or around your area to see their opinions first. Once you have started to tear apart your "X" you are committed and their is almost no turning around.

Any recomindations on types of shops? Should I go to a 4x4 shop or will they be more pricey? What about Ford? Anyone know of a good reliable shop here in Alb. to start with?

Okay I thought of a shop that might do it. Talk to Ron at A1 Equipment. It is a hydraulic/forklift shop but Ron operates a side business modifying 4x4's and doing custom work. My friend had some work done there and seems pleased with him. Sorry I dont have his number but you can look it up.

PS - Is your Explorer green with a black brushguard and 2 lights?

Thanks for the contact. No worrys about the # I can call the shop and talk with him. My ex is nothing to take note of. It's maroon with black undercoating over the finders and kickboards. I also have a roof rack with a bunch of random stuff piled on it. Seen it around?

I might have. I know I have seen 1 or 2 explorers w/ roof racks around town other than mine. If Ron will not do it maybe ask him who could.

Santa Fe wrench

I can probably help in any manner. Working on a 88 ranger V8 swope now. I also own a 98 V8 AWD. I own an exhaust shop in Santa Fe so I have most of the equipment for fabrication. I usually build Streetrods but I get ask from time to time to build 4X4's. I have converted a 70 F100 shortbox to and 84 1/2 ton Ford IFS, 460 auto, 205 transfer case on thirty threes. Build many other mud boggers, drag, Streetrod, and show cars. Currently on a pit crew for a Nostalgia digger, and a AA/TF front engined dragster that runs 6.11@235mph. I have a small shop but a wealth of knowledge that I'm willing to share. Call or come by.
