This seems like a dumb question, but i cant change one of the spark plugs on my 5.0 exploder. Its the second from the front on the driver side (i dont know the cyl #s). i think if i could get the boot off i could change it but i cant seem to get the boot off by hand and if i got it off i dont know if i could get it back on.

Any one have tips or tricks for this SOB of a job?

If the boot is baked onto the spark plug you will have to twist the boot back and forth until it releases it's grip... if the metal clip in the end of the boot has a death grip on the end of the plug, sometimes you end up pulling quite hard before the boot will release.

A pair or spark plug wire removal pliers is helpful in these cases, sometimes you end up ripping the damn thing off and buying a single spark plug wire to replace the one you just ruined. When you put them back on throw a bit of dielectric grease in the boot. It should help prevent this from happening again.

When was the last time you replaced your plug wires? It might be time for a change anyways.

Good luck.

well all the other ones came off no problem, and i didnt change them but they look quite new (napa premeums says my mechanical advisor) the truck had sit for a little while and the gas had gone bad and foulded out a plug so i have a miss on one cylinder, and i've changed all the other spark plugs exept that one. why i cant change it is because i cant get my hand in that little spot to get the boot and wire off the plug.

i have a second gen with a v8, its alot harder to change these then it is with a 4.0 in a frist gen. i changed them all through the wheel well.

It couldn't be any easier to change the plugs on the 5.0. pull out the smaller piece of the inner fender liner thats held in with the christmas tree clips, and the plugs are right there. It's a 30 minute job at the very most.

i agree with you for the most part, the other 7 only took me about 10 minutes, but its that one thats behind the steering shaft, underneth the manifold, behind the PS lines, and the brake lines.

bump?

It may help to move the steering shaft.
loosen the bolt near the firewall-be sure steering wheel is locked!!!
Then remove the bolt, and "telescope" the shaft downwards-allowing it to swing down out of the way-
just loosely install the bolt back into the shaft so you don't loose it-

I'm going to have to take a look at the sparks on the driver's side.. the passenger side looks easy as pie.

I have small hands so who knows.. I might be able to get the driver's side with little to no problem.. We'll see.

i got it, it was just a matter or finagaling the socket and extention around the brake line, steering shaft, and strut tower, oh my.
