5.0 Torque Converter Stahl Speed ??

Anyone know the Stahl Speed on Torque Converters in 5.0 equipped Explorers ??

To test the stall on your current torque converter: With the engine running and the brake pedal held firmly with your left foot put the selector in drive and depress the accelerator fully to the floor with your right foot for two to three seconds. Your stall speed will be the maximum RPM shown on the tach.

Can someone with a 5.0/AOD Explorer tell me what the Stall speed is for the Torque Converter ??
 






gotta go to the hardware store today, ill test it for you and post back here in a little while. BTW- that is a general method that will give you a decent idea at what the stall speed is close to. its not 100% acurate, but close.

i think im gonna re-name my truck "streeter test mule".

same as all of the 5 liter X's... the 4R70W.

Were'nt some of the early ones equipped with AODs and AOD-Es ??
 






for the most part, the 4R70W is an AOD-E... but there are differences between them.
and like james t said, ALL 5.0 Explorers have the 4R70W.
 






tried this earlier today.

umm... yer gonna have to get someone with an AWD to do this one. did it 3 times, once on white concrete street and twice on sticky black asphalt. all three times resulted in nothing more than alot of tire smoke.

Ok everybody it's too late now but I will go out on Sunday and do the brake check for evreybody. I have AWD so it wont be a problem.
 






Sorry, but couldn't this method of testing do some kind of damage?

nah... look at my avatar. same thing. sure, you could tear up all kinds of stuff, but more than likely you wont. as with anything in life that is fun, there is a risk. and, i just dont think 3 seconds of attempted brake stand will do much of anything.
 






Just figured it would put alot of stress on the torque converter... weird! When I floor my brakes and punch the gas, my rear wheels dont get power, I can do it in dirt and all four wheels get full brake power and no spin...... dunno what the deal is.

Didn't the AOD up thru 1991 with the AOD-E 92-95 and 4R70W start in 96+ ??
 






The 5.0 started in the X in 96, so thus all Xs have the 4R70W :D
 












Doing a stall test heats up your tranny fluid very quickly and can ballon the housing of the torque converter if done excessively.
 






i love my manual transmission :) . too bad i dont have a 5.0 to go with it :(
but it's pretty quick for a suv. i can get the tires to smoke easily (first gear really takes advantage of the torque curve).
 






the 5.0 has good power too... too bad the AWD keeps me from squealin the tires :(

This test wont work. To test your stall speed is simple. This isn't acurate. The stall speed is when the torque converter stops sliping. So if you have 2wd this is what you do. Power brake it like you said. At the rpm that the tires brake loose, that is the stall speed.
