UPDATE: This actually ended up being my camshaft syncronizer, not my waterpump!

The water pump in my 1997 Monsterneer has started chirping and squeaking. I poked around with a stethoscope and it seems to be coming from the water pump.

I am looking at these water pumps and wanted to know if there is anything in particular I should be watching out for:

Pep Boys/Bosch 98151 $64.99

Oriely Master Pro Select CP4101 $82.99

Autozone Duralast CWP-9047 $64.99

Napa Tru-Flow TFW 43068 $58.50

All of these are new pumps, I don't see any reason to save $5 for reman unit. All of them are available for local pick up. I need to pick one up by Wednesday evening so I can start this mess of tearing down the entire front end of the motor!

I would go with Pep Boys one.

the noise may be your cam synchronizer. i believe it lives in the same area of the motor and is a common failure on the 5.0. search the forum for more info.

I do like Bosch products so that had me leaning towards the Pep Boys one.

The cam syncronizer is not something that I had thought of. Guess I will be breaking the stethoscope out again tonight and seeing if its louder on that or the water pump. Mine is also squealing often enought I think I can try the removing of the serp belt to see if it makes it go away thing.

Thanks for the inpu guys. I initially thought "it's a water pump, no big deal" but now I am really glad I did post this here. I could just see going thru all the work to replace the water pump just to find it wasn't the pump.

I'll keep you all posted.

Dan

i'd remove the serp belt and see if it still makes noise. if it stops you know it's not the cam synchronizer. while you have the belt off try spinning all the other pulleys. you may be able to figure out what the problem is for sure. could just be an idler or tensioner pulley bearing.

Well the stephoscope sounded a little bit louder and a little bit sharper on the cam syncronizer. So I started looking at how to get the serp belt off............. Man that belt tensioner is burried! I'm gonna look around a bit and see if there are any pointer on here.

Yup, you guys saved me a butt load of work for nothing! I unloaded the serp belt and routed the belt over the top ideler. Started the motor and it was still squeaking so no new water pump for me.

Now I get to read thru all the threads on what I gotta pull to play with the cam syncronizer. Looks like I get to pull the coil pack.

BTW, a 15mm boxed end wrench works quite well on the belt tensioner. It helps that I have a MAC CAI I,m sure.

Get the Motorcraft syncronizer from Rockauto!
Don't get the cheap China clones, I did try one and when I saw the difference from the original one and the fact that wasn't even meshing good with the gear on camshaft, I took it back.

Motorcraft unit is on order, but won't be here untill after this weekend :(

I am intending on driving it this weekend so I will attempt to lubricate the one I have and hope for the best.

I did pick up the alignment tool from Autozone. The 4 piece kit was $26 and is part of their loaner tool program so I can return it for full refund when I am done. Now I just have to figure out which tool is for my 1997 Monsterneer application.

What do you think, given the choice, yellow tool or gray tool?:

30/84-S2603 Ford Trucks 1999-96 (yellow tool)

30/84-S2604 Ford Trucks 1997-96 (yellow tool)

30/84-S2606 Ford Cars, Trucks 1997-95, 6C, 3.0L (yellow tool)

30/84-S2602 Ford, Mercury 2004-96 (gray tool)

30/84-S2601 Ford/Mercury Trucks 1998-96 (gray tool)

I am leaning towards the gray tool. They do look quite a bit different from each other and I doubt that they would both even mount on to the same mating piece.

The black tool and the blue tool are only for 98 or newer application so I didn't even bother to list the applications above.

I pulled off the sensor last night and sprayed in some liquid wrench spray oil (not the penatrating oil). After letting it soak a bit I started it and the squeak was instantly gone. I shut down and did a second round of oiling for good measure and let it sit overnight. Drove it to work this morning and all is still good. Hope it makes it until I get the new one.

Thanks for the poke Jon.
